So after many years of headphone listening I have finally decided to wet my feet in the world of shelf speakers. Unfortunately I know almost nothing of set-up or otherwise. I know I want to buy each component seperately so I can upgrade easier later on and after many hours of research I have finally found what I think is a decent pair of entry speakers. I have deciced with the "Monoprice 5-inch Powered Studio Monitor Speakers". Now the problem I am having is finding a decent reciever with all the inputs needed (an explanation of the inputs would be nice too namely XLR, TSR and all others). Any recommendations on a reciever that would work with these speakers and will not break the bank?

PS, I would also like to have the option to add a Sub-woofer in the future.

Passive speakers and a powered sub can be run off a receiver. If you want powered speakers like those you listed then you don't need a receiver.

If I were going to use a sub then I would buy a proper receiver and passive speakers. My Harman/Kardon is a 2 channel receiver with sub out. Works great for my 2 channel listening.

Or you can buy a receiver and a couple of tower speakers that don't require a sub.

And the search continues. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess the search will continue. Unfortunately I am limited in space. So shelf speakers are what I am eyeing. I will search passive speakers and see what comes up... Any suggestions?

In that case, your best bet is to go with an entry level HT receiver. Accessories4less has factory refurbished/factory warrantied Denon AVR-E300 for $169

Then I would recommend a Dayton SUB 1200: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1200-12-120-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-629

Put the rest into speakers. HSU Research, Ascend Acoustics, and EMP Tek all make good bookshelf speakers that would fit your budget.

I curently own a number of home speakers from Infinity, Polk, Sony, Hsu Research. And subs from: Klipsch, Velodyne & Hsu Research.

For bookshelf speakers I can highly recommend the Hsu Research HB-1 MK2
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/hb-1.html

Over the course of my 42 years on this planet I have heard many speakers and I have to say that I have been totally blown away with the HB-1 speakers especially when considering their price. I drove over to Hsu Research to demo these several years ago and within minutes I bought them. I was blown away then and I'm still smiling everytime I crank these up.

They are not meant to produce deep base and of course work best with a good sub. The speakers should be used with a high pass filter (which most home theater amps will do for you) and then use the sub to handle all base duties.

Definitely getting the reciever thanks for that! And as far as the speakers go, the EMP Tek ones sound very enticing. I was reading some reviews and the word "forward" comes a lot. Which sounds like my kind of sound preference. And the price is not half bad.

As for the sub. 12" feels a little too large for my taste. I may go with an 8" or 10". Any more suggestions on that front?

By "tastes" do you mean lack of room for it? Or some misconception about sound quality? For instance, I can guarantee you one of my 18" subs in my living room is better sounding (SQ) than any smaller sub you can buy for under $500. With subs, bigger is often better :)

I see. Yeah I guess I felt that bigger sub means bigger bass. Which I definitely do not want. I want bass just not so much that it overpowers the highs and mids if that makes sense. Well that sub you suggested is out of stock unfortunately.

There are big subs that sound great, and little subs that sound great. There are big subs that sound bad, and little subs that sound bad. And you can always integrate a big sub into your system just as easily as a smaller sub.

It just so happens that the SUB 1200 is one of the best buys in this price range. I'd get the rest of my system and wait for it to come back unless you want to increase your sub budget. It is certainly worthwhile. A sub is a big driver in a big enclosure with an amp. So there are definitely improvements in SQ as you go up in price.

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to guide me in the proper direction. I took the plunge and bought the reciever and speakers. I think it should do well for me right now. And I will check out that forum and see what it entails.
