I decided to go retro for a while, I'm selling my brand new (swapped at the genius bar) 5th generation 30GB iPod and I'm bidding like crazy on 1st generation iPods on eBay.

For those of you who have/had a 1st Generation iPod (That's the one from 2001, mechanical scroll wheel, Firewire only, no dock connector), how is the sound quality out of the headphone jack? Is there any way to get sound out from firewire for line out quality?

These aren't major concerns as I'm obviously expecting a step back in most features from the iPod going from 5th back to 1st, but I kind of miss the way the iPod used to be, and want to take a couple steps back for a bit.

good for you, i cant really comment as i havent heard them concurrently, but from what i remember they were pretty good, its like most things, things improve over time but it wouldnt be a massive step back AFAIK.

it sounds like your love for the retro aesthetics/workings will more than compensate for any sound issues!
