Although cost is not always an indication of quality... Most of the recommended headphones on Head-Fi has always been weeded out in their cost/performance ratio (which is why you rarely see the Sony's that you can find on the shelves recommended here.. along with various other choices, right?)...

SR-80 is still an entry level headphone in the overall world of Head-Fi here. It is a very good headphone in its price class, and probably the best rock-oriented headphone in that class... however, it is definitely not yet good enough to be considered one of the headphone you can be "finished" with.

Typically "finishing" a headphone system means you have a certain quality of matched hardware (where the diminishing return really kicks in, and you have to spend hundreds to thousands more to get just a bit of noticeable performance increase), SR-80 is still on the very low-end spectrum of headphone scale.
