A vintage DT48S (or any other version, preferably made more than 30 years ago) at least to listen a really old design and how things have changed since these were designed, if I'm not mistaken, in the 1930's. Extra bonus: this are built so well and are so resistant that you can use them as weapons against any threat to your headphone collection

The HP1000 is like a legendary. Would love to try all these.
Quote:
Nobody has mentioned the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 yet? It's certainly a great value for what you get, and even if you don't like it, it should serve as a benchmark to determine what you will like.

I'll nominate a few others, even though I haven't personally heard them. The AKG K1000 would have to be on the list, simply because there hasn't been anything like it before or since. The Koss PortaPro and Pro4AA because of their legacy. The beyerdynamic DT48 because it was the first dynamic stereo headphone ever made (back in 1937, in fact). Finally, the Joe Grado HP1000 because of the Grado legacy it set in motion (and the higher standards in headphone sound it established), not to mention the difference between Joe's and John's ears.

JVC flats. Yes, the ones you can get for under $10 on ebay. Try a pair, if only to show yourself that price isn't everything and that there exists a headphone you can recommend to people who don't want to spend even $50 on headphones but want an upgrade from their ibuds, skullcandies, cheapo sonys, etc.
