I will have about HKD8000(~USD1000) to spend on a home setup next year. What I have in my mind is:

Philips 963SA
Maxed-out META42 or something else?
Sony CD3000
Decent IC/power conditioner

I feel pretty happy with my humble setup actually. But this offer is just so hard to decline. I like to listen to rock, anything from Radiohead to Sigur Ros and a bit of other stuff. Actually I guess most of the time I will just listen to normal redbook discs, I just think that getting a SACD player like 963SA is better for long term investment. Are there any better options rather than META42 for CD3K? Please gimme some advice.

P.S. I don't know where I should post this. There should be a general forum for whole setup-related topics like this. :p

Hi,
Do a search on "CD3000 amp" in the Amp section, you'll find a number of threads on the subject. Good luck!

My big question mark is actually if I should get 963SA or instead a normal CDP and if CD3K suits my musical preference... Amps can be dealt later.

No one here agrees on what the "best cans" are for any kind of musical taste. I can tell you that the contenders for you in your price range to research (maybe you've already done this):

1. CD3000
2. Senn HD600/650
3. Beyer DT880
4. Audio-Technica W1000
5. Grado SR-325/RS-2

Personally, of these choices, I like the CD3000 best (though I haven't heard the 880 or the W1000, though I've heard the W2002 which is similar). The Senn sound can be somewhat reserved and "veiled" which you may like or not like. There aren't enough reports yet on the HD650 but it seems to be a minor evolution of the HD600, no guarantee you'd like it if you find the HD600 "boring". Personally, I find the Grado house sound to be "colored" and fake-y, but there are people here who love them.

If you go up above in this forum to the Full-Length review section you can find a couple reviews I did on the CD3000 vs. HD600 and a meta-review on the CD3000, should be helpful.

A lot of people like the Phillips but the main knock on it I've read is somewhat weak bass.

I will have a chance to listen to CD3Ks with PPA and 963SA very soon. Then I will know if I like this rig.

My only question remaining is whether a power conditioner is overkill. :O
