Thanks. I would be interested in this, but if I order something at that price from a country outside of EU, I might have to pay custom fees. :<

Look for used speakers.  I've picked up respectable speakers for $6 to $10 a pair at thrift stores and fundraising sales.  Classified prices will be higher, but you should still be able to find nice speakers for 1/3 retail.  A hi-fi dealer might be able to suggest a model that was both good and popular in the past, and should therefore be widely available used, or have some to sell.  On the other hand... most home stereo speakers weren't intended for near-field listing, so they may or may not perform well sitting on a desk on either side of a monitor.  Googling near-field monitors might bring up some better candidates.  (Just be aware that some monitors were used in recording studios not because they were good but because they sounded like typical real-world speakers, like portable radios or cheap home stereos.)

As for the power supply, yes, an AC adapter with a higher current rating is a good thing.  It provides more assurance that the voltage won't sag when the bass hits.

If you enjoy carpentry, there's some full-range drivers that would make good near-field monitors.  I made a pair using the Audax AT100M0 (it looks like at least one dealer still has stock of those: http://www.cadaudio.dk/audaxunits.htm )  I chose them because they were shielded (less important now that CRT monitors and floppy disks are history), and it had an F3 below 100 Hz in a sealed enclosure.  Check out the full-range forum at diyaudio.com and you should find other candidates.

Actually peeps report that beefier PSUs seem to improve SQ a bit and 12V/2A is doable but may be a tad under powered In theory the TA2020 could generate 20 x 2 RMS into 4 ohms max Also thats a bit steep - here is one with a 12V/4A version - u have a have a power plug matching your country though ^^

And a Tripath Lepai TA2020: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lepai-Class-T-Tripath-TA2020-A-Amplifier-12V5A-POWER-/290534659322

So I have a question. On the power input of the TA2020, it says 12V2A. But the AC-adapter that comes with the TA2020 from that E-Bay sellers says 12V5A. So this is a really newbish question, but the higher current on the AC-adapter shouldn't have any negative impact on the amp, right?

Yeah, I think I'll look a bit more on sites like Ebay and see if I can find any interesting speakers at low prices.

And I probably should've mentioned, but I'm going to be sitting about 1 - 1,50 meter away from the speakers. Not sure if that counts as near field listening or not though. And thanks for the tip about monitor quality.

I might look into custom made speakers sometime, so thanks for that tip. But I think I'm gonna wait a bit with that if so, since I don't feel so confident about trying that atm. ^^

About the AC-adapter, that's good to hear. I wanted to make sure it would work, rather than regret it later.

Finally, thanks trog for that link! I'm not sure why I wasn't looking at that one in the first place. I'm gonna place an order on that! :)

EDIT: Sorry for being a pain about the power supply. :x But in that Ebay article, they mention this:
Quote:
By the way, this adapter is output DC 12, 1.2 A spec and the input from AC110~ 240V is also available. It works well for the amp, Hope this service can help you.

Do they mean that it outputs 1.2A? I was a bit confused about this since they stated that the power adapter was 12V4A too.

EDIT2: I sent a message to the seller, asking what the current of the power supply is. It turns out that it's 1.2A.

Well I just wanted to say that I have now ordered an amp and a pair of passive bookshelf speakers.

The speakers I decided to go with were a pair of black Monitor Audio Bronze BR1: http://www.quantumelectronics.co.uk/acatalog/monitor_audio_bronze_br1.html

And I went with a Tripath Lepai TA2020 from this seller: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lepai-Class-T-Tripath-TA2020-A-Amplifier-12V5A-POWER-/290534659322

I want to thank you guys for all the help! :)

Already bought, heh. But thanks for the reminder. ^^

Well, this is kind of a new field to me, so It's not going to be a deep review at all. I don't really have much to compare them to either. But I'll make sure to chime in and say what I think about them at least.
