@joshfc2001
I had a listen to the balanced jack of the TAZH1ES and compared to the Balanced jack of the ZX507 with my IER-M9.

I notice that the TAZH1ES has a sound that is very clean and distortion free, like most class A amp I have heard. It's not harsh, no glare in the treble. It's felt flat across the frequency spectrum, even with Dsee HX and DC phase turn on.

The ZX507's sound is quite different, it's more dynamic and more aggressive. It doesn't have the smoothness and refinement of the TAZH1ES but I am hearing more sharpness and transient attack out of it. The bass on the ZX507 is much more emotive to listen to.

I find myself liking the sound of the ZX507 output more as it has more entertaining to listen to. I think the TAZH1ES is certainly a great clean sounding amp, it has one of the most quiet noise floor I have heard.

You could not have put it better than that. It was my thoughts as well which you managed to put into words. I'm actually okay without the TA-ZH1ES as I am very happy with the ZX507 on its own. If I do get a good offer on this 1mth old TA-ZH1ES I may let it go :). Its good to have at the same time I can live without it.

So I have re bought it.

507 TAKE TWO!!! - and ACTION!

my justifications

it’s my birthday next week
I hope the firmware sample rate rumour is true
With my new LDAC neckband for my iems the small size may be less of an issue as it won’t be pulled around by a thick heavy cable.

caveats

I won’t be able to use any buttons for Amazon Music HD - screen taps only
My old eyes will have to deal with the tiny screen
my big old, dry thumbs will have to deal with operating the tiny screen too.
I am wondering between these two players. Is there any lag when simple multitasking (searching while streaming or streaming while downloading) in these players? How is the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth range on these players? Thanks

I managed to make the ZX507 sound as pristine as the TA-ZH1ES for pure offline sdcard playback. Before this tweak, there's some treble roughness/haziness to the zx507, now it's totally organic.

You have to follow this steps listed below and switch off Hi-res streaming:

Not mentioned here is that the 507 will not be playing Tidal (or Qobuz or Amazon Music HD) back at full hi res - 3rd party apps are capped at 48k on this device.

It may sound great - but playback of any 3rd party app on the 507 can't be called hi res

Only files played by the Sony Music app will be reproduced in true hi res
Does this apply when playing Tidal/Qobuz via USB Audio Pro App?

There has been an update that changes everything I said above.

I wish Sony would hurry up with launching their streaming service internationally.but it won’t fly if it’s just j pop, classical and jazz.

I will be sure to try out those detailed steps and revert with my findings. I am running the latest version v2.02.01 on the ZX507. By far the best DAP out there for the price IMO.
I will be posting my review on the new B&O H95 streaming via Bluetooth with ZX507 as the source. The results are astonishing..REALLY! What an amazing pair of wireless headphones... BRB :)

I see this on AptX Adaptive

Screenshot 2020-09-29 at 11.47.58.png

@420kBits/s It boasts 96k 24bit

But the Sony 507 does not list AptX Adaptive in its specs..

So I presume it defaults to AptX HD quality

Shame the B&O H95 did not include LDAC codec..

I will put my wallet back in my pocket.

Sometimes it's not about the numbers. I tested the WH-1000XM4 with LDAC with hiRes files through ZX507 as the source and yet the B&O H95 with its 24-bit 48kHz sampling over aptX HD still sounded much clearer and better all round. The bass/subbass is much lower, quite punchy, super clear. The mids are brilliant too. The H95s with its titanium drivers and tuning has no match currently in the wireless department.
