Why connected with a cable

Strain relief. Looking at the Grado design as an example, instead of having the entire 1/4" plug and 1/4" jack and so on hanging on the 1/8" jack, you just have a 1/8" "like normal folks" and the adapter bit is just absorbed into the cable length. I think twist-offs are a better design overall, but the cable adapters certainly have advantages over big'ol plugs and twisting/bending jacks on components.

You can get really small adapters, that after plugging the 1/8" jack in to it, it about the same size as a 1/4" plug. I don't think strain relief is an issue, it's actually worse with such an adapter, as you have the weight of both male and female plug putting strain on to 1/4" jack and the socket of whatever it might be plugged in to.

Do you have an example? I'm curious here - better solutions to this setup are always good, because as you point out, yes there is more weight (I do know that with the Grado cable setup, it seems to flex the jack less on my equipment with the Grado adapter, versus with the K701 adapter).

Have a look on eBay.

As someone who makes a living selling cables, i always recommend the one piece adapters to my customers.

Something like this maybe, not as big as some of the others and i have seen smaller,

That's the opposite of what I'm talking about though. I think those adapters are excellent though.

The other style that you linked later, is what I'm opposed to - they put more weight on the 1/8" jack than it should carry imho (given that the jack generally sags with those + a heavy 1/4" plug (like you'd find on the RS-1 or HD-650)); the in-line cable adapter tends to relieve this by just make that weight "part of the cable." Again, YMMV. :xf_eek:

I recently picked one of these up and the quality was HORRIBLE. It fell apart Taking it out of the bag. Just saying... :)
