I'm new to the proper hi-fi scene and have just been been listening out of my phone until now. I've been looking for combinations of hi-fi equipment that I can use to listen to at home and have come down to this: cambridge audio cd10, cambridge audio dacmagic 100, Cambridge audio am5. Does anyone have any thoughts on this setup or any better ones (UK prices please)? I will be using m audio bx5 d2 speakers to listen to this and maybe some headphones in the future.

Check out the website AVforum, it's located in the UK and should help you find the best prices or best bang for the buck, with in the UK and near by.

Since you already have powered speakers then you don't need an separate amplifier. If you really want a CD player it will already contain a DAC so you wouldn't really need the dacmagic either. Finally if you already have a computer with an optical drive connected then a dedicated CD player is also surplus to requirements.

If I had £400+ to spend and liked the sound of the the BX5 I would buy an inexpensive netbook (with optical drive available) and a Focusrite 2i2 interface (or equivalent). That way you could rip and tag your music as you played it and use the 2i2 interface to control the volume on your monitors, as a headphone amp and as a means to connect any other inputs you might have available. For e.g. if you got a cheap BT receiver you could continue to enjoy the convienience of using your phone without wires.

Touchscreen would be a cool extra.

If you need an optical drive get a DVD capable drive so you can listen to videos too.

If you already have a computer or tablet you could use then get a Focusrite 6i6 (or equivalent). It's worth the extra for mains power and stand alone operation even before you factor in the extra channels.

Whatever you decide buy mail order from Germany. The pound is at record levels vs the Euro atm. I can recommend Thomann for reliable service.
