Recovery or Regen?

Hi leeperry,

I found your great detailed review of the Recovery and it sounds like a very good device.

Let me first explain my setup for now

PC-> Curious USB cable -> DXIO Pro3z USB to SPDIF Converter -> Black cat coaxial cable (silver star 75) -> Marantz SA11S3

I'd just order a DC30W PSU, Ifi Ipurifier 2 and Ifi DC Ipurifier to add to the set )

As for the W4S Recovery, i do have a few questions:

1. Will the device work properly with only data signal feeding it and no 5V from the PC? I mean is it stable.
I emailed Tony at W4S and he said it's designed to use with 5V, but users have reported that it also work without.

have you tried comparing the sound between with power and without power? Which one provide better sound?

2. As for my Curious USB cable, is there a way to modify it to omit the power of the PC.
A mod that is reversible would be great. Do you have an instruction that you can share so that I can follow?

Thank you so much!

Hi there, glad you liked it :)

It most definitely works, I tried it from several computers and my rev C PCB doesn't need to see the +5V signal from the PC, all it needs is the shared ground and the two USB data wires. It's an old trick that never disappoints.

In my experience SQ always improves when you break the +5V pin, worst case scenario you can fit a tiny bit of electrician tape on it if it's a pricey cable.

Thats great to hear

When you say a shared ground, does it mean i have to connect something else too?

As for the psu, did u also experiment wih different voltage input? If so, did it affect the sq? )

Ground is shared in USB, I meant the USB ground.

The W4S gizmo runs linear voltage regulators on its external PSU input, as long as you're within its rated input range you're good to go and this will not affect SQ IME....of course the less noisy the PSU the cleaner the sound.

So the Bakoon BPS-02's 5V is enough for Rev. C Recovery? or is your BPS-02 a 6V one? Please let me know, Thanks!
