This DAC spend 20-30 hours of burn in before taking details of this review

Pairing

with Salnotes Zero OG

The bass is clean and impactful. It is way to far from the boring mood of bass the zero have. The midrange where its excels the lushness and sweetness of vocals when I listened to Alisson Krauss if you close your eyes and you didn't know it's Salnotes Zero you'll never believe it's in your ear its different and not the typical zero anymore.

with Simgot EW200

The bass is authoritative and full. EW200 has a bright signature. This iem is prone to harshness. But if you paired it with DC04 PRO. It smoothen the treble. It tamed it a bit. The dynamics is excellent. The sound stage is wide and spacious with good sense amount of width and height. EW200 is one of the most sensitive IEMs but I didn't hear floor noises which is great handling sensitive gears.

with EPZ Q1 Pro

The bass is clean, yet good impact. Midrange instruments have good separation. The vocals is more forward in the mix with touch of naturalness. Treble become lively and energetic. Sound stage is wide and spacious. Imaging and layering improved a bit.

With Letshuoer DZ4

It has tight and well controlled bass. If you give enough power this DZ4 you will feel that visceral feeling in the subbass. Mids is more forward in the mix. Vocals is thick and organic. Technicalities such as soundstage and layering improved a bit.

Conclusion

DC04 Pro is a powerful DAC AMP that can play whatever your set is. It can able to drive every IEM in your sets with ease. I found that it is best paired with neutral-bright to bright sounding set. DC04 Pro has probably the best price to performance-ratio having the independent volume adjustments, driving power, excellent dynamics , good detail retrieval and wide sound stage. This is an easy recommendation for those who want to upgrade from their budget Dongle DAC/AMP.

Head-Fier
iBasso DC04PRO: Exquisite performer
Pros: Uncolored, natural, organic, transparent and detailed; good soundstage, top image, and great dynamics and separation; outstanding quality.
Cons: Maybe not the tallest and deepest soundstage, but a rather minor nitpick.
Introduction

iBasso is a company that does not need any introduction. It is one of the Chinese leaders in the audio trade specializing in IEMs, DACs, amplifiers, DAPs, and accessories. In the past few years, it has presented some very nice DACs, among them DC03 and DC04; both were of great quality, with nice sound tuning, and got good reviews.

Recently, iBasso presented DC03PRO and DC04PRO. By just looking at these new devices, you understand the high quality of the two products. And of course, a high-quality product is usually accompanied by high-quality sound, so it was a real temptation to find out!

DC04PRO.png

Description

DC04 was of great quality, but it had a more “conservative” design. DC04PRO is one of the nicest looking DACs in the market today. Anodized, CNC-milled aluminum around, with two tempered glass covers on top and bottom and with two classy buttons on the right side is all one can ask for. The unit comes in two colors, black or blue. Everything looks, feels and sounds of top quality!

DC04PRO_1.png

Despite of having 3.5mm TRS + 4.4mm Pentaconn outputs, DC04PRO is quite small measuring 59m x 23.4 mm x 12.1 mm and weighting only 21 g. It connects by a USB-C to USB-C cable or for iPhone users by a USB-C to lightning cable, which sells separately; I also had in hand the new really great CB18 USB-C to USB-C cable on which I am going to comment below.

CB18.png

Moreover, there is an iBasso UAC APP made for Android users and giving you: 100 steps of hardware volume, 5 digital filters, 3 gain levels, 2 output modes, 20 steps of L/R balance and a power saver. Furthermore, on the top side, there is anLED light, indicating the current sampling rates: Red for standby, green for PCM files and blue for DSD files.

DC04PRO modes.png

DC04PRO was designed with all the latest technology and all of iBasso experience:
  • Dual Cirrus Logic flagship DAC chips CS43131, which are equipped with Master HiFiT technology for improving the performance and sound. These coupled with a synchronous DC-DC converter and a low-noise high-speed LDO, having 100dB Power Supply Rejection Ratio, ensures great sound quality with extremely black background. CS43131 has been quite popular recently, as, among other things, has (according to Cirrus Logic’s description): An integrated GND-centered with a Class H headphone driver able to deliver 30mW per channel at 32Ω; PCM decoding up to 32bit/384kHz and a 32-bit oversampled multi-bit modulator with mismatch shaping technology; and an output level of up to 2 VRMS into 600Ω headphones.
DC04PRO circuit.png

  • Dual RT6863 OPAMP chips, which create a 4-way fully balanced amp with ultra-low distortion. Having an output current of up to 100mA and working at a 10V swing, make DC04PRO output to reach 280mW@32Ω.
  • The iBasso in-house developed FPGA algorithm, which is used for the first time in a dongle. This coupled with a KDS femtosecond oscillator, for controlling the jitter, ensures a distortion free sound reproduction.
DC04PRO FPGA.png

  • A lower power consumption, 650mW in balanced mode and 550mW in single-ended mode. Furthermore, DC04PRO offers a power saving mode option, in which the power consumption is as low as 410mW.
  • Top measurements, such as S/N 131dB, THD+N 0.00013% and Noise Floor 900nV or 0.9μV.
All this “sounds great”, but how is it translated into sound performance? Let’s find out!

Performance

Overall, the sound is balanced, transparent, airy, rather linear, although not boring, with good soundstage, great imaging, top dynamics and separation.

The bass is as much as it is supposed to be, and DC04PRO does not have the warmth that is sometimes present in some previous iBasso DACs. This does not mean that the low frequencies are missing, but rather the opposite; there is sufficient sub- and mostly mid-bass that leaves one more than satisfied and, most of all, the bass is taut and very well controlled.

The mids are very nicely presented, without been forward or recessed, and female as well as male vocals are very pleasing to the ears; never shouting or shy independently of how much one increases the volume. It also blends beautifully with the bass and the tremble.

The tremble is sharp and revealing, with plenty of details, without ever been harsh or hissing even in pieces that have plenty of high frequencies; you hear details that were unheard before, and the sound is crispy without though been annoying, which that alone is not a small feat.

All in all, the presentation is very well balanced, and in that sense appears to be rather linear, but it is certainly not boring; it is natural and very pleasant, something in between of analog and hi-fi sound.

What is remarkable is the transparency of DC04PRO, something which we always are coming after, but we don’t always find. Here we do!

The sound is sufficiently airy, with good soundstage, particularly in width, and if I had a complaint that might be the soundstage height and depth, although this is rather minor, and combined with the overall performance it does not really stand out.

The imaging is really great, very correct and almost holographic, while the dynamics is very broad and the separation flawless.

The power is more than sufficient, even for the most demanding and stubborn headphones and IEMs, and I can’t imagine what one would have a complaint in this department; honestly, I never considered the power of a DAC to be an issue, as people are sometimes completely unreasonable and nitpicking.

Last but not least, DC04PRO has such a low noise floor that it can be used with even the most sensitive headphones and IEMs; it always remains perfectly quiet.

All my testing was done by using the CB18 USB-C to USB-C cable, which is great and it overall elevates the performance by some margin; so, if I was buying DC04PRO, I would spend the extra money for CB18, as it certainly worth it.

Selected comparisons

One of the top DACs in the market, and one of my favorite ones, is the Questyle M15. It is beautifully made; and it has top performance and ample power. M15 is based on the flagship ES9281AC DAC chip, and it uses the famous and patented Questyle “Current Mode Amplification (CMA)” technology.

Questyle M15.png

Compared to DC04PRO, M15 has a kind of a bit more linear, more hi-fi I would say, performance, which some people might prefert. DC04PRO, on the other hand, is more alive, and this is something that I personally like. Also, DC04PRO gives you the impression that has a more detailed presentation, although this might be due to its aliveness.

DC04PRO allows you to adjust the volume from the unit, while M15 does not, although it has a gain mode.

I should also mention that M15 costs almost twice as much as DC04PRO, so the latter, compared to the former, is a bargain.

Conclusion

DC04PRO is an amazing unit. It sounds uncolored, natural, organic, transparent, detailed, with good soundstage, top image, and great dynamics and separation. On top of all this, DC04PRO has an outstanding quality, for which iBasso is well known.

DC04PRO is one of the best implementations of the CS43131 chip, and one of the top DAC/AMPs in the market today. At $119.00, it is also a bargain. Certainly, a five-star performer!

Reviewer’s note: The reviewer is grateful to Paul Hu of iBasso Audio for sending him a sample of DC04PRO and to Marek Raczyński for the kind collaboration.

iBasso DC04PRO

In my review i used flac files and my own tidal playlist.

Prelude. iBasso is not idle, releasing new series of mobile DAC/AMP like new collections of clothes. And so, with the end of winter, the phenomenal DC06 left, and its place was taken by the improved DC04 with the pro note. Does pro mean better? By definition, it should be so, but as the world has shown more than once, it is not so obvious. Quite recently I wrote to you about a great metamorphosis, which was the unrivaled DAC/AMP DC03PRO at the price of 69 USD. Today I will review and analyze the DC06’s direct successor.

Unboxing: The packaging looks familiar, a piece of plastic, specifications, a detachable usb type-c cable and the device itself. This time we don’t have MQA, instead we have a great chip from Cirrus Logic known from devices such as iBasso DX170 or xDuoo link 2bal and its double implementation was used. The technical parameters are impressive. In addition, two headphone outputs 3.5 and 4.4 mm. But that was already done, iBasso decided on two very important aspects for me, taking the example of devices such as lotoo paw s1 or luxury w1/w2. Finally, a hardware volume control and a fully functional application in which we can freely tune our device have been added.

FB_IMG_1695570826379.jpg

Sound:

Bass: In the case of the iBasso DC04pro presentation, I can describe the lower bands as springy and very tight, closer to accurate and punctual hits than to a loose and slow rhythm. They have a very good speed, despite a slight boost, they do not impose themselves on the listener. It’s actually a classic iBasso sound-house. We will not be disappointed by the texture and the really low extension of the sub-bass. At times, despite the great linearity and balance in the presentation, I had the feeling that the drums or the bass guitar, and especially the electronic music literally „makes me dizzy”, which in this context is, however, a compliment.

Diameter: Vocals are getting more and more stunning in iBasso products with each edition, we have here a really neutral and realistic presentation. The voices are engaging and not colored, although they are brought to the fore in a very deliberate way. Which works great with different types of headphones, showing their natural character thanks to the amazing linearity in the DC04PRO. The instruments, in turn, are realistic, especially when it comes to imaging and the amount of information, they are not artificially inflated and plastic, it’s more of a live concert than another disco-polo show. The micro dynamics are on a pleasant and not exaggerated level. And if we take into account really good macro-dynamics, which goes well beyond the price of 119 USD (549 PLN in Poland), then we can pick our jaw up from the floor.

Treble: They are neutral and safe, they do not peak as high as in the DC06, but they are not lacking in any case. We have great stretch and a very large amount of air. Everything is properly separated from each other and well placed in time and space. I liked the naturalness of the presentation, even though the treble is a bit sharper than, for example, in xDuoo link 2 bal or lotoo paw s1. I had no problems with her excessive loudness, which I really liked.

Stage: Here we have excellent width and much improved depth and height compared to the DC06. Which gives you the feeling of communing with slightly more expensive equipment, and yet the price is the same as in the case of its predecessor.

Power: We certainly won’t run out of power on either the SE or the 4.4mm balanced output. iBasso DC04PRO is able to easily drive most mobile headphones.

Comparison:

DC04PRO($119) VS DC03PRO($69)

As for the sonic signature, it is similar, but there is more detail in the DC04PRO, especially in the higher tones. The presence of a balanced output also significantly increases the soundstage and power of the device (almost 3 times 280mW vs 92mW). We get a slightly more technical and resolving product, which justifies the USD 50 surcharge.

DC04PRO($119) VS DC06($119)

The DC04 PRO is not a rival, but a direct successor to the DC06. It abandons MQA for a number of improvements. The DC06 is less natural and has more power. DC04PRO wins with functionality and sound realism. Both products are great and I still love my DC06, but the DC04PRO is a great improvement on its predecessor. I wish a bit that the MQA decoding option was added to the DC04PRO, but it is not noticeable in everyday use. The DC04PRO also puts more emphasis on the midrange and linearity of the transmission.

FB_IMG_1695570820857.jpg

Noise: The iBasso DC04Pro has a perfectly black background and we have absolutely no noise here.

Summary: iBasso DC04PRO is another novelty in my dongle portfolio. Added hardware volume control, fully programmable FPGA, with the ability to fine-tune parameters in the application. The purity of the signal and the power section has been improved even further. Significantly reduced energy consumption. On top of that, an efficient, very competitive dongle with a detachable cable was created for a price that is downright indecent. Of the minuses, I can definitely include the fingering glass on the housing and the lack of a dedicated case. I hope iBasso will include such an accessory as xDuoo did with the link2 bal model. In addition, I would prefer the ability to change settings from the PC application. However, the whole is very coherent and the build quality is impeccable. If someone is looking for a natural sound with emphasized low end and neutral midrange, then this is the DC04PRO. In addition, the linearity and natural / neutral timbre throughout the tonal range put the DC04PRO very high on the technical and resolving level. Actually, at the price of USD 119 (PLN 549), I can say that this is a very high bar. As in the case of the DUNU DTC-500, I am shocked at how much budget equipment can be refined and I have great respect for such a philosophy. DC04PRO joins my dongle collection and ranks in the top five. He also had no problems with driving most headphones, whether they were very sensitive softears volume headphones or quite demanding ones. Tin p1 was able to cope with them. This is due to the low output impedance. The energy consumption was really optimal for the power. In my tests, I used dense files from the TIDALA DC04PRO, it was great with their resolution and was able to use their potential.

Executive summary

The iBasso DC04PRO is a USB DAC dongle with a detachable type-C cable and two headphone outputs, balanced 4.4mm and single ended 3.5mm.

It uses dual CS43131 DAC chips and separate dual RT6863 high current amplifiers. The advanced circuit also employs a synchronous DC-DC converter, ultra-low noise LDO, FPGA and KDS Femto second oscillator.

The chassis is made from CNC aluminium with tempered glass panels that add a luxurious feeling. Build quality and finish are excellent.

The iBasso DC04PRO has various power saving modes that helps it to consume less power depending on the use conditions. Using the single ended output will automatically disable the unused half of the amplifier. The user can also disable the extra amplification stage and use the embedded headphone amplifiers of the DAC chips to lower power consumption. This function is available through the iBasso UAC application which is only available for Android. User settings are not stored in the device memory so it is configurable only when it is connected to an Android host.

The audio performance is truly excellent and punches well above the modest asking price making the iBasso DC04PRO one of the best value USB DAC dongles in the market. Punchy and dynamic with plenty of power to drive a lot of full sized headphones. Musical, natural and engaging with realistic timbre and excellent transparency. Open sounding, spacious and expanded with sharp imaging and a grand presentation.

The iBasso DC04PRO offers excellent sound quality, plenty of power output and great efficiency in a small form factor and a very modest asking price making it one of the best values in the USB DAC dongle scene.

Bought this, compared to Cayin RU7, returned with no regrets.
Cayin can also drive my HE1000 Stealth, the iBasso could also get some respectable volume but pulled a much less satisfying performance from them. Almost the same story with the Fiio FT5, although the gap between the 2 was less evident with that.

@aravaioli , the Cayin RU-7 is better sounding and more powerful but also double the price. Since you could afford it, you made a right choice.
