Well done.
One thing I'd add is that the PM-2 can be had refurbished in "like new" condition with a full warranty for $499. There's pretty much no competition there in the value department IMO.

Def not the headphone for me. Your review made it easy for me to tell that and I am appreciative. I have a very clear idea of it now. However, I would love for you to get your hands on the Ether C for a comparison/review as well. Your impressions seem dependable and I am much interested in that one. Hopefully they are a good value.

Great review man.. thorough and in depth for sure.. also, 794 mW:
Requires 794 mW to reach 125 dB (threshold for pain)

Looking forward to your Ether C review as the beast says

Great review! Your impressions are very much in-line with my own first-hand impressions of the Ether. Very well articulated here. Definitely agree with your comparative comments with the HE-560.

Total newbie question: Does "subbass" refer to the range between bass and mids, or the very low end of bass? Thanks.

Thank you for all the kudos & the kind words. This was actually my most exhaustive review so far, so I am glad that many people found it helpful & enjoyable to read!
@grizzlybeast, iirc your tastes accurately, I do think there are better options for you personally. what's your current fav/main headphones?
@potkettleblack & grizzlybeast, I would love the opportunity to audition the Ether C for an extended period of time, but I probably will not be able to purchase them at the moment. Hopefully there will be some sort of review tour or head-fi meet nearby in the future.
@Hansotek, glad to see my impressions matched yours! I recall you often have quite insightful impressions, so good to see that you found my thoughts to be accurate.
@zachawry, subbass is the lowest bass frequency. typically 20-60 Hz (HERE is a helpful link for understanding frequency response & instrument correlations). hope that was helpful!

Thanks for a great well written review.

Great review Dennis, I got a chance to hear the Ether when I was in Japan last week, it didn't impress me much and like a few others here like the HE-560 much better. One of the headphones I wanted to try but my friend didn't have was the PM-1 or PM-2, if you have heard them, how do they compare to He-560, if they are different enough I might try one.
Sonic Defender
Ultimately I think this is yet more evidence of just what an excellent performance value the HE 560 is in this category. I sold my 560s after a year and I have certainly missed them.
Sonic Defender
Forgot to mention, dude, killer review absolutely full of information. Very sweet and very useful.

@Sonic Defender. I agree the 560 is a great value. They only gets better with age as they break in further.
Their neutrality has changed enough now that they have a distinct personality that I gravitate to more often than my other planers. The exception to this are my LCD-3f. I put the 560s right below them and ahead of the LCD-2f, Fostex th-900, Oppo pm2 and Alpha Dogs.
Nice review Money. Thank you.
