Are these still relevant when compared to more recent offerings? Looking for something new to compliment my energetic FIIO FD5. The re800 currently selling for £103 which seems mental
Bugger it, £103 new on Amazon. Worth a punt, so went ahead. The re400 were my first proper earphones that got me in to this hobby many years ago. One of the only ones I've ever had that fell apart too tho lol. I do remember them having nice a midrange for their price
VERY early thoughts. Def brings back memories of the re400... But WAY more refined. I've only had them for 2h, just been song hopping and changing tips.
Cons - bass can reach low but can't be felt. Vocals are recessed and rather dry, defo pulled back
Pros - bass is very accurate, hearing some wonderful reverb in jazz, big band. Treble is insanely good at times. I'm not huge into classical or big orchestra but I do experiment when using new phones... I don't think I've ever heard more detail coming thru in my usual John Williams go-to tracks. Like I get a sense of how many are performing in each section as the dynamics are so accurate.
Final E tips help add weight to bass, but at the expense of some width as the treble is slightly scooped and soundstage gets narrower.
I've only paid £100, hearing treble this good makes that a bargain already. I'll need more time to judge whether they'd be worth £240+. I've not hit them with much power yet either
Wow, these are a different animal with a warmer source and a bit more power. My DAP has a Sabre DAC which I find are always bit brighter. My desktop has a smoother AK and with the added MF amp I have the low end of the Re800s is better than I thought. It's still not a powerful bass, but it's got enough weight now to be satisfactory and enjoyable. Better still, the new combo has really helped with vocals. No longer dry and now adequately forward (not up front, but central and fuller).
The detail these have is the best I've heard of any earphones I have. These are starting to remind me of their he400s but more extended either side
