Most Grados come to you, hat in hand, headband soft to adjust, sound signature set to Full Fun, eager to accommodate your every wish.
But the HP-1000 suffers you to come to it, in supplication, its sound signature set to Truth, and may allow you to earn the right to enjoy its more subtle pleasures.
Tone and timbre on the HP2 is one of the best I've heard. If you want the best headphone amplifier for the HP1000s, I would suggest seeking out a modified Melos amplifier. That amplifier was designed with the HP1000 in mind. It really plays to the strength of the HP1000 and gives it more body and air. On the other hand, the built-in headphone amplifier of the Resonessence Labs invicta gave the HP1000 the tightest, most impactful, and most dynamic bass I've ever heard ! I wish resonessenece labs had developed a stand-alone headphone amp - what it did to the HP1000's bass was amazing.
Good review. As someone who has had many hp-1000s and two of the hp-2i models that joe refurbished... the i models are a bit more forward and resolving. A click better in many categories but not a different headphone all together.
I really wish grado re-issued this headphone and did alway with the glue/wood/plastic construction on their current line.
I do not agree that you have to adapt to them if not to weight and (dis)comfort ; but about sound , it is as fast as transparent on ears to me . I have still both one hp2, and one ps1 ; and would never sell them . But I admit that if I have to grab a Grado these days my eyes stop more into the modded Gs2 as they are more transport-proof .
I dont use them much lately as comfort is an issue for me , they are uneasy to hold for more then brief listening sessions whereas I can wear other pairs for many hours ; the 2 metal pin protruding for drivers height regulation are a little unconveninent and more in general weight+design make them not so stable for moving around , a mod to get them into a portable fit has been a dream of mine .
About amping , while the Melos is undoubtely a great match for them regarding their transparency , then consider also it won't add very much into the bit-lacking bass .., other amp options will fit the bass signature a bit better if anything
*also if you like very much their technicals , transparency , timber , holographic stage etc , I'd advice you to try run them balanced a day , they benefit quite from it
