They are worthy of their asking price indeed.  I would like to add that the Utopia is very efficient and I do get a really good sound out of a DAP such as the Sony NW-ZX2.  Of course, it does get considerably better out of my full-sized amps such as ECP L-3 & SuSy Dynahi.

Which do you prefer on the Utopia, Silver or Black Dragon?  I'm running a silver dragon on mine.

Just received mine a couple of days ago. Using a Wywires Platinum cable. So far, I'm loving the sound. Expect things will get even better with more hours on both.

Great review. I own the Elear and am always curious whether or not I should upgrade. I will listen to the Utopias at Canjam SoCal and then decide. I think my system of Metrum Musette and Wells Audio Milo would be great with the Utopia.

It's tough for me not to be curious about the Utopia. New flagships seem to always do that to me. But I've definitely decided to pass on the Utopia. The price and the weight being the primary reasons. Then add the fact that I own the hd800 and a good tube amp, and I just can't justify them. I'd love to audition them one day though.

Excellent review! surprisingly not 5 stars

For 5 stars, they would have to be perfect. Their three faults are, IMO, the tuning (needs just a touch more bass) the out-of-phase bass (not discussed in the review, as it's not something I'm knowledgeable enough on and not something the average person would notice) and maybe the stock cable. But balanced against everything else they are still excellent I reckon.

I actually agree with your rating, just surprised you don't give a 5 stars since you seem to like it a lot in the video(nice video btw), for me the main downfall is the price, really expensive here in Australia, due to rate exchange and tax.

Phase issues in the bass is not a minor thing. Is it common in the model, or is it possible it's a defect of the ones you listened to?

If you're going to write "Phase issues" at the very top of the review, then doesn't it seem like a good idea to mention this in the review itself?

Listing it as a "con" and at the top then providing zero further elaboration or explanation is pretty bad practice for a review.

It's pretty bad practice to elaborate on something I don't truly understand, but come from someone else's measurements. I've only found phase issues to be very audible in IEMs, which make them very off, so I'm not going to say anything more. I only mentioned it because someone asked why I don't give 5 stars, which to me would be for a product about I can't think of any serious negatives. I've removed the mention from the cons so as not to cause any confusion.

I'm just curious because I'm not even sure what "phase issues" means.

What do you think is better 009 or utopia?

On the Stax amps, the Utopia is likely the winner.  On KGSSHV Carbon, the SR009 is superior.  I have both, and I prefer to listen to the SR009 or SR007 out of the KGSSHV Carbon for that matter over the Utopia + TOTL dynamic amplifiers.

Which has more detail?

I prefer the SR009 but the Utopia is not that far behind.  Plus it can sound quite good out portable sources.  Something that full-size electrostatic headphones can only dream off.

Yeah but which is more detailed sounding?
