When it is about tonal balance, then yes, the Titan 3 is my favourite model out of the three, but I find the Titan 5 a slice more refined in some areas (mids) and also prefer that it has more upper treble (the Titan 3 focuses more on the middle treble). I am quite adaptive and even for outdoor use, I tend to like several sound signatures, depending on the purpose, mood and music.
That said, I also really like the Titan 1, but not so much for music with vocals (-> personally only use it for Electronical).
The Titan 5 has got that nice "subwoofer-feeling cellar rumble" with a bass emphasis that is almost identical and a lot of fun sometimes.
But yeah, the Titan 3 is the one I prefer the most as all-rounder.
The funny thing is that I'd regard the Titan 5 as the most balanced (DUNU also stated that they tuned the 3 for vocal lovers, but they also agree the 5 is more balanced).
Excellent review though Chris. One thing we can all agree on is that the new Titans are incredible value for money.
<<The Titan 5 has got that nice "subwoofer-feeling cellar rumble" with a bass emphasis that is almost identical to the Triple.Fi 10's and a lot of fun sometimes.>> <- forgot that part
It's not that the Titan 5 is heavily sounded or coloured, but its bass is (at least in my ears) the strongest in the Titan family and a bit more present than the Titan 1's which isn't on the bass-light side either (but both are not bass-heavy either, the amount of "oomph" is good and not exaggerated). Seal plays a role as well, though.
@Brooko Did you try the Titan 3? I don't see a review... I suggest trying the T3 when you have a chance. I think you might find it more balanced than the 5. That said, the T3 is more fatiguing for me, but I do enjoy it with a wider variety of genres. I just can't listen to vocals with the T5 and enjoy it, they're too veiled for me in the midrange.
Avi - I have the Titan 3. I am reviewing all 3, but releasing as separate reviews - each on their own merit. I've spent a lot of time with all 3. Between the 3 and the 5, there is no doubt at all in my mind that the 5 is more balanced. According to Vivian (DUNU), they see it that way as well.
@Brooko I see... well, I guess that depends on the definition of balanced. I have no doubt in my mind that the T5 has a U-shaped signature, so I wouldn't call that balanced, if if the company told me what they think of it - that's the beauty in reviewers Whether the T5 is more balanced than the T3 I'll leave up to debate - IMO they both have strongly emphasized aspects of the spectrum, so I wouldn't call either one balanced. But who wants boring old balanced anyway xD
Since you consider the T5 perfect for female vocals, I'm interested in hearing what you think of the T3 regarding the midrange. I'll keep an eye out for that review
Believe it or not, but after checking the photos, I thought of either re-doing them or retouching the fingers, but then I realised that there were three fingers and it was the Titan 3, so I decided to leave the pic as it is (also to make it more authentic and give it a "human" touch).
