Great review. I think that some of the darkness you are hearing is lack of high frequency distortion, not rolled off or muted highs. (Just my 2 cents worth). I find that their tonality and timbre very much matches what I hear when I see live jazz, especially unamplified. I also thin that lots of folks use the terms 'neutral' or 'technicalities' when they are rfeally referring to brightness, and tipped up upper mids and treble for that extra sparkle, e.g., if a can or iem makes every jazz recording sound like an ECM recording lol.
Great review. I'm planning on purchasing a pair of nighthawks in about a month. Your impressions of them remind me of my DT 150, which is a good sign as I'm looking for that sound signature.
@fzman I have to agree about that. Many headphones I found considered neutral are actually quite bright or have some distortion going on in the treble causing glare. I often found what is often consider somewhat dark is actually what is most neutral.
@Amish Thanks! I appreciate it. It's funny, cuz I actually told a buddy early on when I first got them that they didnt impress me at all... I guess I spoke too soon there...
