AKG K401

Lewzke

New Head-Fier
Pros: natural sound, comfort, big soundstage
Cons: hard to drive
These headphones are very similar to the K501. They do similar natural, analytical sound, however they have different flawor.
The K401 have little bit more impact on the bass and have little more body, but they dont have the refined euphonic upper-mid-high K501 flawor.
The K401 is more all-around headphone than the K501, but still have the bass roll-off. For rock, hiphop the K401 is better choice,  the K501 is better for classical, acoustical music.

Totally agree! I had one around for almost 20 years driven by bad amp-outputs making not really fun. I bought a Ifi Ican micro some days ago and cannot stop listening the K401 .. i wanted to buy a new AKG 712 Pro but I am not so sure if this one can be a worth upgrade.
The Ifi Ican is bringing life in the AKG and some gimmics like bassboost and 3-D enhancement could helb with some recordings, great am I guess.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but the 401s were my first high-end headphone back in 2002. Ultimately let them go, but they just popped into my head. Now having spent quite a few years evolving with headphones/iems, I wonder what they would sound like with a good amp/dac combo and what might be similar to their sound in any, much more recent headphones.
