If you had approx $200 to spend on tools

Desoldering braid, a $25-$50 cheapie multimeter, some sort of stand with a clip holder on it for holding wires or small boards, and the best soldering station you can afford. EDIT: Oh yeah, wire strippers

    Grounding a guitar amp

    Idea: passive lineout for ipod.

Putting even a 10k pot in front of earbuds that are no more than 32 ohms would result in virtually no signal actually making it to the earbuds. Even if you could get a pot that was low enough impedence, line outs aren't designed to produce that much power.

    Leaded Solder = Health concerns?

My understanding is that silver solder flows better with silver plated wiring. Other than that, I think it is a waste of money. Unless of course you are doing DIYFP, in which case people will happily pay extra just to say their amps have silver solder in them

    FET complimentary buffer?

I don't know of any reason a diamond buffer couldn't be biased into class A as much as you are looking for. A simple tweaking of the first stage bias current and the ratio of the emitter resistors should yield the results you are looking for.

Gah, I forgot to pop back on and thank you guys for your help! I never got into hte eBay scene, so no I didn't try them in my initial search. I ended up buying this copy: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...3012&rd=1&rd=1 I just barely got this in time for christmas so I only got a...

Trying to find an LP, advice on where to look plz

Hey All, I am trying to find a recording of The Planets, featuring Stokowski conducting the Los Angeles Phil. My dad said he used to have the recording when he was a young man, one of his favorites, but he lost it. The particular pressing he had had a cover with a nebula and Stokowski's head...

My feeble attempt at a discrete I/V stage

No reason. We focused more on the overall design, and not so much on the implementation. Caps across the cascoding LEDs would probably help with distortion at high frequencies, and putting a cap between the current mirror's bases and their respective power rails would probably help prevent...

Popular songs you would like to see DIY amp reviews based on ?

Gustav Holst's "The Planets" suite is a popular choice. The different movements provide a pretty wide range of sonic characteristics that are good for checking out overall orchestral presentation. I am a fan of Neptune and Uranus. The recordings by Boult, Bernstien, and Dutoit are all...

They appear to be the same size driver as the prestige series, perhaps a couple millimeters smaller. I think it is just the smaller enclosure making the driver look smaller though. EDIT: For my fellow modders, these things look like they come apart very easily for modding so recabling should...

Hah, now I will feel bad if yours end up on the for sale forum in a week I will share a few qualities about the sonics, since I really like them quite a lot. These are a much different sound from my (heavily modded) 125s. The bass goes DEEP, much deeper than I have ever heard from a grado...

I own SR-125s. These are difficult to compare since they are a totally different style, but I would say they have more clamping force and the earpads are quite nice. The band nestles around the ear reasonably comfortable IMO, though I have never worn this type of headphone before so I take it...

The earphones don't sit quite as well on the ears quite as well if you rotate the band up. Still sound the same though. They definitely feel like they were meant to have the band where it is in the pic, or perhaps up a little. Keep in mind the collar on my shirt is a bit high. As I sit here it...

Just got mine, too! Thanks Grado! My initial impressions are pretty good. Headband is simple, but feels quite sturdy. They have a bit of clamping force, probably more than some people would like but for a portable I imagine it makes them more stable and I don't find it uncomfortable at all...

    Help with this diagram.

This type of filter, a capacitor and a resistor, is called an RC filter. It's pass frequency is equal to 1/(2*pi*R*C), R being the resistance (impedence would be the proper term but we are making an approximation) of the speaker (we are approximating it as a resistor here) and C being the...

    Help with this diagram.

You are reading the diagram correctly. The capacitor effectively forms a high-pass filter with the impedence of the speaker. I can't say that it's necessarily the BEST crossover network, but it seems to be what the manufacturer is recommending. That seems like a rather small capacitance for that...

    SMD Dinalo?

The best advice I can give is start looking at datasheets. See if there is a suitable SMD component for all of the semis in the dynalo. Off hand, I think you could do it.

Can anybody recommend a good recording of Holst's The Planets?

I've performed parts of this work many times, and it ranks as one of my fav pieces to listen to and/or play. Admittedly I've only heard a couple recordings but they've all either been very well performed but poorly recorded or well-recorded but poorly performed. Can anybody recommend a...

    Grados Vs ?? in Rock

I've had Senn HD-25-1's for a few months now, and I gotta be honest they are dang good for rock. They've got the mid-bass punch of the grados, but the low end extends a lot deeper. The highs are a bit recessed though. I've found they sound better at high volume whereas grados sound better at...

what song list do you use to "test" out new to you headphones?

I like the album Damnation by Opeth. Their stuff is really well-recorded, the acoustic guitar work is awesome, and the album has a well-balanced, well-blended sound. Another album of theirs I like to use is Ghost Reveries, again, as it is well-recorded but it is more traditional prog metal and...
