Did you select the EU option when first starting the player? If you did, that may limit the maximum volume.

Popcorn Hour A-110, brilliant or pants?

I have one and I've been reasonably happy with it. I use it only for video playback and yes, it has some bugs but not too many to annoy me. I have C-200 in pre-order now.

Help me find some audiophile recordings for these artists, and recommend me some music too!

For Depeche Mode, everything released since 1997, starting with Ultra and any remaster since, is brickwalled and unlistenable IMHO. Earlier albums with original releases are good.

If you don't want fast drive, one choice is Samsung EcoGreen F1. Uses just 5W of power when idle and max noise is 29dB SPL. They are 5400 rpm drives.

How to downmix 6 channels to stereo?

I have had good results downmixing some DVDA's to stereo using Audacity. Typical channel order is Lf - Rf - C - LFE - Ls - Rs and your picture looks like that too, but you could listen C and LFE channels to see if they are really that way. Then, drop levels of L and R channels 6dB with the...

USB to SPDIF that does 24/96 and works in linux

You need to define inexpensive. I have Edirol UA-25 that works up to 24/96 but I have only tested it on the analog level, but I would assume that digital ports work too. But the selection between 16/44.1, 24/48 and 24/96 is on hardware level, it can not be changed on the fly. Not very...
