The individual units are more specialized for the frequency range. Just like in economics. More people being specialized in a particular area produces a better economy. Better product results.

The Etymotic 4S is too cheap to be listened to for a bassless sound. It works with say the Westone W80, but for me the 4S is too thin and inperceptable for value. I love the 4XR, it sounds like a greyish blue exquisite sound of sci-fi. The Etymotic Clinic really know how to make progress.

I'm not picky about the treble. I just love it cause it's AKG and produces a high quality result as a major specialized experienced brand. I always use the stock tips. It's only with the Sennheiser IE80 S that I've had to change the cable because the sound was intolerably weak.

Think the ex800 sounds like the Sennheiser IE8 with my Cowon X7. The 8 might be about that in the names. Think they were competing and sony did a real good job to mimic the organic sound. So glad I found a replacement.

I think the filter is needed otherwise it sounds shrill but the effect is minimal. I lost one of my filters on the EX1000 and recently got the EX800 and think it sounds comfy and complete in comparison.... Where can I get a replacement filter? I don't think I can make one myself.

I just re-obtained an Etymotic 4P..... still love this headphone. Had some good memories with it. Seems like a gift from God. Definately has the sound that goes with being the winner of the planet..... sci-fi. And so great for pop music too.
