    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...again while I've now relegated the MT8's, and so I'll probably not keep adding to this thread - which is supposed to be about the MT8!, I can give an opinion of the new to me, Shure 840A... Overall the 840A are ok, but to me are a miss, and so wont be one of the few headphones I swap...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

Ok I need to properly report back after a bit more of burning-in of the 840A's but I have an initial impression... The width, soundstage and 'dynamic-ness' of the Shure 840A's is similar to the Senn HD280Pro's. Both very different to the MT5's - which are not as extended, not as wide, but to me...

...while EQ isn't possible with my use of headphones, I did try it but didn't like the results, ended up sounding 'electronic' /mp3, preferred to adapt my hearing to any wobbles in the freq response. Oh and yes the DT770 80ohm does need some juice to drive it (in this regard it's more like...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...yes I find freq response graphs do tally with what I hear, though separation of heard freqs and tightness and recovery of low freqs aren't shown on the graphs - yet are just as important. So the graphs are a guide but I've leant not to treat them as god. Some HPs that are panned due to a...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

…many thanks for you first appraisal. I use HPs into many synths and different audio interfaces, and the laptop, so EQ isn’t an option, and over elevated treble I find difficult. I’m still looking for a better HP. The Senn HD280 Pro is very good, wide, clear, enjoyable and non-fatiguing, but a...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

I look forward to your comparative views on those. To me the DT-770 is just too harsh, and while the Shure 840 might be more tame it could be rather slow and muddy - I await your verdict. For a fuller and wider sounding HP to the MT5 I still give that to the Sennheiser HD280 Pro. It's somewhat...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

Not tried them, but the 700 Pro X may have the most neutral rendition of Beyer’s. Though while highs are tamed I read there’s still some dips/‘holes’. If you like the Beyer sound they could be worth a try. I have 3 Beyers and I’m not that keen on them, the DT1990 are the best of them though. Re...

It is well acknowledged that the MT5 have a slightly forward mid-range, and the freq-graphs show this. Vocals sound very clear and present. Compare tracks with clear male vocals, even more in a talking style, and you’ll find other headphones will drop vocals away - that is a sign of V shape...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

Just pulled my MT8's out, found the mid-highs resonant, confused and quite clangy; then-on down - to lower freqs, quite light. Put the MT5's back on, and all good. The MT5's are not perfect but they are the best I've got. I'll order a pair of the Neumann's closed-backs in the new year, they...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

The MT8 use completely different drivers and sound **completely** different to the MT5's, in fact the MT8's sound the most different to all the headphones I own. The MT8's almost raise the pitch of audio, their mid-bass is light and their mid upper and uppers are pronounced. The detail is...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

Guess what?!! - the headphone I use most days is still the MT-5. they just give me the best rendition I need to create, mix and master. I wouldn't rely on them for mastering, but all in all they still are closest to my monitor speakers - of all the other headphones I've tried. Indeed I wouldn't...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...yes same size, they fit fine. The padding is softer and thinner with the 8 pads, so the drivers will sit closer to your ears - maybe too much bass then from the 5's?

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

I wonder if the new ATH-MSR7b might be worth a try? - anyone else out there with views about this? The MT8's are now my daily driver, though I often wish I could have just a bit more open soundstage to the sound, and perhaps less shouty at higher volumes. The thing is, overall the MT8's give me...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

Once in a while, just for kicks, it's worth watching Zeos. He says the open back DT900 are great the DT700 are not - too harsh, though also read the comments below the vid, there are fans of the 700's...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...the high frequency buzzing of the DT770's is caused by a hair getting stuck on the driver. I've been inside these headphones, not that easy and did successfully remove a hair which solved the problem. But I wouldn't buy another set of DT770's due to their sticky drivers! Of all my headphones...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

DT770 are undoubtedly V shaped - and can sound like there's a quiet 'hole' in the centre - almost like the weird 'anti-pressure' effect of noise-cancelling headphones - an odd hush in the centre frequencies, the MT8's much flatter - vocals more detailed and forward - though can at times be too...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

I've had my original pair of MT5's for just under 3 years, which I've been using for a few hours, mostly everyday, the pads are still fine as is the headband. They sit on a table otherwise, not rattling around in a bag. Of the many studio headphones I own, the pads seem of no less inferior...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...well I have both the MT8's and the MT5's and prefer the design, weight, pads and sound of the MT5's. I have 3 pairs of MT5's in different locations, while the MT8's are stuck in a cupboard.

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

If you've used the MT220 don't get the MT8's - they sound far too harsh - not equivalent. So don't worry about the pads, just avoid the MT8's. The MT5's on the other-hand sound great (as you'll have read from what I've said before), also the pads are better that the MT8's (-which are too soft).

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...that's a fair comment, though your T5V's do have extra 'air' in the upper mids from their tweeter design than most other monitors. They are v.good monitors for their budget but not perfect. Equally I've not come across a headphone that is perfect. Overall I find the MT5's to be more detailed...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...ok I totally recommend the MT5's over the MT8 (I have 2x MT5's and 1x MT8's, and use the MT5's 90% of the time) please report back on how you judge their sound (whichever you choose).

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...as I say the MT8 are not for listening pleasure, they do not give a correct representation of how music was intended to be heard by the musician; the MT8's are for technical inspection only. The EQ is pushed up in the treble region and reduced in the bass region. For example I use my MT8's...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...it depends on your use. For critical inspection the MT8's - but they don't have an accurate/flat freq response (you can't master/EQ with them), while the MT5's come very close to perfect to my ears (you can master/EQ with them). You can't really beat monitor speakers like the Neumann's - in...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

I believe my views to be unbiased. My 'control' are my Neumann KH120 monitor speakers, the flattest, most detailed and rich, 2-way monitors available. I own many headphones (and have tried many others). My recommendation are the MT5's, I have the MT8's but rarely use them as they under-represent...

    Yamaha HPH-MT8 studio monitor headphones

...for live recordings I'd certainly choose the MT5's. They are like the MT8's with the bass turned up 1 notch and the treble down 1 notch. The MT8's can get too brash - especially for live recordings, ok for very well-mastered recordings with tamed highs though - but I still wouldn't consider...
