Keeping Vinyl in a Hot Apartment
Hi all, I'm moving to a new place on the east coast pretty soon, and it doesn't have A/C -- indoor temps will probably get up to 85 degrees. Am I in danger of having my records (40 or so) warp in that kind of heat, even if I keep them away from direct sunlight, store them tight and upright...- M0T0XGUY

TURNTABLE SETUP Questions thread - don't start a new thread, ASK YOUR QUESTION HERE!
Hi all, This question might've been asked before, but I've done some searching and haven't found a good answer. I'm looking to align a cartridge with the stupid protractor from vinyl-engine, but what I've noticed in all these TT-setup vids is that the alignment tools (mirrored protractor...- M0T0XGUY

Was Gifted a Behringer EP2000 PA amp -- Too Much Power for Wharfedale 10.1s?
Hi all, Just a quick question for you guys. Last week I bought a set of 10.1s, figuring I'd sort out the issue of a proper amp later. Well, as luck (perhaps) would have it, today a musician friend of mine gifted me this...- M0T0XGUY

Inner Groove Distortion
Not sure of the answers to a lot of those questions, which probably isn't a good thing. My turntable's a Pro-Ject Debut III with the stock tonearm, and the cheap Ortofon cartridge -- I'm unfamiliar with the term "effective mass." "Compliance," too. As for a protractor, I used one from...- M0T0XGUY

Inner Groove Distortion
Any recommendations on a cheap cartridge that will specifically eliminate inner-groove distortion? E.g., not one that will necessarily sound as nice as, say, that Grado Sonata, but that which will at least play a record near-distortion free?- M0T0XGUY

Inner Groove Distortion
Sorry if this has been posted a billion times before, but lately I've been wondering: is there any way to combat inner groove distortion? My turntable is new, factory aligned, my stylus is new, my records are literally brand spanking new, never played before, and yet all of them turn to...- M0T0XGUY

Knows Nothing of Speakers; Has $1500-$2000 to Spend on Them Anyway
I've heard that B&W speakers are a bit overrated in terms of sound-quality. Any truth to that rumor? -
Knows Nothing of Speakers; Has $1500-$2000 to Spend on Them Anyway
Thanks for the links. I should clarify a few things: I have all the necessary complimentary equipment. Power-amps, pre-amps, interconnects -- I've got 'em. So unless there's a sonic benefit to a fully-enclosed system, I'm not worried about shopping for plain-old speakers themselves. ... -
Knows Nothing of Speakers; Has $1500-$2000 to Spend on Them Anyway
This is true: I bought RS-1s because I couldn't afford a decent set of speakers. Grados, I thought, were the closest thing to matching them (in terms of raw musical energy). But now I have a bulge in my wallet that needs de-bulging. I'm looking for some kind of 2 channel set-up with a...- M0T0XGUY

Stylus Cleaning with a Q-Tip and Isopropyl Alcohol -- Terrible Idea?
Question on actually using the eraser: any scrubbing motion necessary? Or it is a dip in gently and then remove kind of thing? EDIT: Found this link: http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?eanlg&1079733653&read&keyw&zzmagic=eraser Any comments on the effectiveness of the procedure...- M0T0XGUY

Stylus Cleaning with a Q-Tip and Isopropyl Alcohol -- Terrible Idea?
Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll be sure to buy a Magic Eraser this weekend. As for my records: I've bought all of them new, and have been using a carbon fiber brush to keep them dust free. I shouldn't really need to clean them, no?- M0T0XGUY

Stylus Cleaning with a Q-Tip and Isopropyl Alcohol -- Terrible Idea?
Long story short: I just bought a new stylus, and want to make it last as long as it possibly can. I've read of some people using Q-Tips dropped with isopropyl alcohol to carefully remove grime every so often -- but is this really an acceptable way of cleaning? Or are cotton-swabs too abrasive...- M0T0XGUY

Possible Amp Hiss, but only on certain songs eg Coldplay?
That's interesting, because I have a CD copy of Parachutes and I can't hear any hiss. Then again I don't listen to music particularly loudly, and I may not have the most discerning ears.- M0T0XGUY

Vinyl - What Am I Doing Wrong?
P.S. The cartridge was included in the sale and seems fine. I have it balanced so that only the stylus touches the record... I hope that's the correct way to do it.- M0T0XGUY

Vinyl - What Am I Doing Wrong?
By the recommendation of an old thread around here, I just bought an ADC 1500FG turntable off eBay. It said it was in playable condition and all that, but today I have it set up and it really doesn't sound right. I'm cranking the volume knob on my headphone amp way up, and there's still a...- M0T0XGUY

It's true that most everything about vBulletin forums looks dated in one way or another. It's equally true that Head-Fi's new layout is more consistent with modern redesigns of other older websites, regardless of type. Ultimately, though, forums are less about external appearance than...- M0T0XGUY

35mm film low light performance vs. digital?
Digital will always kill film for low-light performance, at least nowadays. That said, I wouldn't generally risk bringing a digital SLR to any concert venue, and current black and white films like Ilford Delta 3200 actually work pretty well in moderately-lit places.- M0T0XGUY

DSLR questions
In terms of image quality, it's true that full frame and DX cameras are virtually matched. If your only interest is in outright sharpness, clarity, color, and noise, full frame sensors offer little measurable advantage in most situations. Yet I would still recommend a D700 or Canon 5D, and...- M0T0XGUY
