Comment by 'LaCuffia' on listing 'GoldPlanar GL1200 - Silver Edition (with two sets of Ribbons)'

Silver seems a bit more neutral and bass is tighter. Gold is a meatier sound - probably better for rock and electronic music. Both ribbons apparently need a lot of break in to sound at their best but these are basically new. Already sounds amazing to me though. The pads also impact the sound...

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

I have these up for sale in the Classified forum if anyone is interested. I have a my eye on a set of speakers and have to reluctantly sell the GL1200 to fund that purchase. I haven't had them for very long, of course, but have listened extensively every day in my home office and they are...

This is an opportunity to own an incredibly unique headphone: the GoldPlanar GL1200 full ribbon tweeters. The sale includes the following as shown in the photos: (1) hard case; (2) the headphones with two sets of ribbons - a silver and gold tinted one, each offering different sound signatures...

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

It's hard to explain but the sound from the GL1200 is sort of FM stereo-like, lush, and pleasant - the detail is all there but it's not harsh. The only other headphone I have now to compare it with is the HiFiMan Sundara, which I actually really like, but it's so strange going back to it now...

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

I managed to change the ribbons with no problem. It came with gold installed so I switched to silver. I tend to favor the silver ones if only because the sound seems more neutral and detailed. I like the sound with the velour pads too. I am not a big believer in "burn in" - at least to...

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

I know Vesper makes pads for the Koss 950 and that would seem to be of similar size as the GL1200, unless they are making them custom. I am using the velour pads more but will experiment, especially if I manage to change the ribbons. The one thing this headphone seems to do is make you...

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

Sorry to ask again but with changing ribbons, are any tools required to lift that little hatch from the top of the baffle? Or is it done by simply lifting the inside edge by hand?

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

Thanks! I am not going to attempt a ribbon swap now - concerned with damaging them so soon after getting them. I just wish there were directions for the replacement process anyway.

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

One question I have is about the Schiit Jotunheim R - I know they are essentially functional with the 1200 but is it simply a matter of getting the male/female XLR adapter? Or does it have to be a specialty adapter to ensure everything is in the proper phase?

    TAOBAO GOLDPLANAR GL850 + GL1000 + GL1200

I haven't posted on HeadFi in several years as I became a little disillusioned with the pricing and hype associated with higher end headphones. I became more interested in speakers and it's actually astounding what you can get for the price of, for example, a Focal Utopia or even a Stax set up...

    QUAD ERA-1 Thread

So what’s the overall verdict on the ERA-1 and how it compares to other planars in the price range? The LCD-2C is basically the same price. Is the ERA-1 just a different sound signature and you can’t really say which is superior or is the ERA-1 better from a technical, comfort and build standpoint?

It’s specifically advertised as easily driven so not sure about that.

    QUAD ERA-1 Thread

There’s been no reviews so far. Interested in brief impressions on sound, build and comfort. I guess this would have a brighter tone than the Audeze but curious as to whether it still has planar type bass quality.

I will still defend it in sound quality and comfort. It's an excellent headphone. It was an impulse buy anyway (the psychology of the "great deal") and don't regret purchasing, but I think it's a waste to have it if I don't get a chance to listen to them that much. If it doesn't sell in a...

I don't find the V2 to be that analytical at all....sure, it has good detail retrieval but I would characterize it as smooth, with more emphasis on mid-range than treble. The bass is pretty good though. I think sometimes people forget that planars often require quite a bit of power to realize...

What’s the difference in sound between the 560 V2 and 4XX?

I now have mine on the 7th notch and can take them on and off with no problem. I have an average sized head I think. It was definitely tighter at first and the clamping force was fairly strong, but it got better over time with some gentle stretching. I agree though that it's not an ideal...

The headband issue is really not a big deal for me. I don’t know if people are realizing the sides move up and down over notches. I have it on the 7th notch out of the 9 available. I can’t imagine all but huge heads not fitting at that 9th slot. I concede the strap could be longer but just my...

Price reductions are common with HiFiMan because they seem to come out with a new headphone every few months. There's always a new one ascending to knock the old one down a peg. Think of a Sanskrit name for beauty, joy, divine, etc. and that's the next HiFiMan.

It looks like the $299 deal has expired....I don't think many people will buy it for $899, so those who have it might end having a sort of HiFiMan unicorn. I am glad I snapped it up at the sales price. You could do a whole lot worse for $299. But I would expect at some point that Adorama will...

I have an average sized head and if you move the headband up the notches to like the last or next to last slot, it should fit fine. It does for me. I think those with large heads will have a problem though. I continue to be impressed sound-wise. I am glad I know nothing about the V1 so I...

Are those car anologies supposed to be about sound? I still don’t understand how the V1 can be that much better. I wonder if the differences are discernible to audiophile golden ears and might not be for regular folk like me.

The grey cups don’t feel like cheap plastic either. It’s solid feeling and has an almost ceramic like finish to it. I guess between the V2 and from what I’ve read about the Ananda and Sundara, HiFiMan is stepping up a little in the build department.

    = HiFiMAN HE-560 Impressions & Discussion Thread =

All I can say is that the headband (or strap that attaches to the metal part) definitely seems like it should have been longer. There is little give to it before it stretches taut. I can see people having a problem with it. It's okay for me because like I said before you can adjust the strap...

I should add that, with all of the horror stories about HiFiMan build quality, the V2 is surprisingly very well built. It's smoothly finished and solid. I really like the grey cups and orange/rust-colored touches. It's a nice looking headphone for sure. Granted, it's not Audeze tank-like build...
