Been using this recently on my desktop. Have a Schiit Modi 2 Uber connected to it, no added power source. Solved an issue I was having where I would get high frequency noise coming out of my speakers whenever I started up software that had my video card kick in.

PortaPros can go pretty loud, I don't even reach the halfway mark on my Ipad and they are loud and clear in a noisy environment. They can get really loud without an amp. Isolation is so so, if you're listening to them in an otherwise quiet room someone would be able to tell that you're listening...

For monitoring purposes, I'd go with Sony MDR-CD900STs. Tough to beat for vocals. They're not $1000, but they are the tool for the job.

HD600 pair well!

Hmm, so you've checked out the HD650s, but have you had a chance to listen to a pair of HD600s? I listen to a variety of genres like yourself and they are my favorite all-arounder from my collection, even when drivng them from a tiny Fiio E6 (I use a Magni/Modi stack when at the computer).

My vote goes to the PortaPros if you don't mind a warm sound signature. I've had my pair for a little over a year and have had no durability issues. I always keep them tossed in a bag that I take to and from work so they're always being banged around and use them for indoor and outdoor listening...

Hmm, I'd give the NAD VISO HP50 a try. I recall them having a pretty balanced and clear sound when I was running bands like August Burns Red and Poison the Well through them. They do slant towards a warm signature though. Only real negative with them would probably have to be the funky headband.
