    MQA: Revolutionary British streaming technology

Just in case an innocent reader stumbles into this thread unsuspectingly..... ....They should know that there is an easy test for all of these claims. Simply take Meridien's choice of best example of their remastered audio, play it on their best equipment, then loop the analog out through a...

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

I don't have a problem with the concept. But then why doesn't Mr. Stewart just provide some solid technical information. It seems like we are all just left guessing.

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

Reading between the lines of this non-statement statement you don't list your secondary or tertiary goals, or give any technical information.   So the average reasonably technically savvy reader of this long and winding thread might instead conclude that what is really going on is that...

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

I've written at length about quantization and jitter somewhere between pages 50 and 100 of this thread :-)  And so have others.  Search my posts.   The bottom line is you can run in circles on all the mathematics all you want there is not enough information available to prove mathematically...

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

Such a wonderful marketing answer that I would be proud of. So many paragraphs written without actually stating that their 24 bit files are actually recorded and mastered in 24 bit. Such complicated information to get from such busy studios.... ah me....

Are external DACs unnecessary? Is a computer just as accurate?

I'm happy with my Realtek HD audio built into my ultrabook.  Mac people seem happy with any Mac model.  You don't have to go far to find Realtek HD it's in most higher end ultrabook laptops from the last 2 years.  To make it into a line out just get a splitter 3.5-to-RCA cable for $3 from...

What effect does damping factor have on distortion?

I'm glad you solved your defective amp problem.   The answer to your question about damping factor is "no".  Damping is just a fancy term for resistor in this context.  If series resistance was advantageous they could just put it in the amplifier box.  The ideal voltage mode amplifier has...

What effect does damping factor have on distortion?

I took at look at the Magni2 specs online (they don't post Magni1) and it's a conventional <0.2 ohm output impedance.  So it's a standard voltage mode amplifier with high gain loop.  I really doubt there can be high frequency instability that is so well understood and easy to stabilize by design...

What effect does damping factor have on distortion?

Sorry I don't know what a magni is and I don't have a clear vision of your circuit. I believe a simple sine sweep will tell all. I feel like it is a simple problem to solve but need some data. Best of luck.

What effect does damping factor have on distortion?

Hmmm.   Interesting idea but seems unlikely to me.    First of all surely this would only happen at high frequency well outside the audio band, and THD+N measurement must be filtered to the audio band, or usually A weighted.  Narrow the bandwidth window to rule this out?  Try just a pure...

What effect does damping factor have on distortion?

I'm clueless why you're doing this but there must be a reason :-)   Anyhoo - basic electrical engineering.  If I understand you correctly, the 33 ohm is on the split branch in series (IE inline between the inner "hot" connector of RCA to line-in with the outer "ground" shield of the RCA not...

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

Hello - anyone out there got anything to say about 24b vs 16b? Yes that is PCM, usually embodied as FLAC.

What does science think I should buy in the head fi market?

No! Don't change the subject!  I want to stay on the intersection between Gazprom, Petro China and Portuguese Sausage.   There should be a new internet rule about how long a thread can go before Gazprom and Petro China are mentioned in the same post.

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

I sense another ABX log posting coming!  I rub my hands with glee!   Please post your 24 v 16.  Lossy v lossless is ok as well but I think that should be taken to another thread.  It's a fun argument point but it's not the same question as 24v16 and does not have the same impact for most...

What does science think I should buy in the head fi market?

I have no idea why this thread has a tendency for every detour and dead-end possible in the history of threads.   In any event, I really like last.fm.  Not only do they track, I intentionally scrobble my own music! Mon dieu!   They take things you know and love and give you new interesting...

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

You're right! It's the wrong thread! :-)   In short, DSD is inferior and I wish everyone would immediately stop buying any SACD/DSD/DVDA so it would just go away.  But that's just me...   DSD is a 1 bit technology.  1 bit is ancient history.  All leading major ADC/DAC today are...

    The scientific merit of Pono

I don't know I have not done a survey.  Since all major DACs are 1 bit nowadays, the parameter is known as ENOB (Effective Number of Bits).  "16 bit DACs" have ENOB 15-15.5 and "24-bit" have ENOB 20-21 bits.   High end laptops usually come with Realtek HD Audio which is ENOB of around 20...

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

It's only more accurate in a sound-proof room.  But we do not live in sound proof room, so the question is whether the improved "accuracy" is detectable in the presence of noise.  And the answer is probably not unless it is rock concert loud.   To be clear detectable here means not just your...

Testing the claim: "I can hear differences between lossless formats."

I don't really understand this post. Please post your ABX log (it will offer to save the log when you exit).  That will tell us what is going on.   You have complete control over playing the A, B and X track in foobar ABX.  In a number of different ways.   30% is a complete fail in...

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

"Unanimous" and "forum" in the same sentence is an oxymoron.   I was told by others (reasonably convincingly, with measurements) that AC/DC new Rock or Bust the 24 bit version is identical to the Europe/Australia CD release mastering, the 16 bit is the US CD which is measurably and audibly...

    The scientific merit of Pono

I didn't mention all the standalone screenless and keyboardless options.  Mac Mini is certainly valid and there are 10s of good options in the PC and Linux world as well in the <$200 range.  My only advice would be get state-of-the-art 24 bit DAC.  Why? It's very little incremental dollars...

What does science think I should buy in the head fi market?

I already subscribe to Netlfix.  I've been intentionally waiting a little for the Google-Spotify-Netflix competition to heat up before dipping into streaming.  I actually use last.fm from time to time to find new music, sometimes that can really be awesome.  I have a friend who is expert in...
