From what I understand the new (beta) firmware was put together to address the file limitation when browsing "all songs".  I believe the most recent "official" firmware (2.2) has playlist support.  I don't believe anything has been done to address the scroll wheel speed... but agree that it's...

Good tip... I've tried to alleviate it by placing my finger at about the 5 o'clock position and then pulling down to 6..but still kind of a pain...
