    Because Society Doesn't Allow It

I'm sure all the naysayers will get really manly hearing aids when they're 45. Forget cowardly long hair, manliness is scoffing at them and doing what you damn well please.

    AKG K240 vs ATH-ES7

The K240 is no smaller than the DT770, so probably wouldn't be such a good option for work. ES7 is probably a better work option, if you can take a supraaural for hours on end.

Stax 2050 (System II) or RS-2

I've heard a lot of Stax headphones (not exactly the 202 yet, but various other Lambdas) and nearly all the Grados including the RS-2, and I'd take the Stax any day of the week.

Is this enough power for my hd580's?

25mWpc into 16 Ohms is less than my mp3 player, which wouldn't sound very good with HD580 either. Try either a different headphone, a different field recorder, or break down and use an amp.

    Stax SR-303 and SR-Lambda

The SR-Lambda and SR-303 are indeed very similar headphones, and personal taste will probably be a bigger factor in choosing between them than is absolute quality. To my ear the difference is a greater extension and possibly precision in the 303, and a flatter response in the mids. The SR-Lambda...
