    Kennerton Odin (listening impressions)

Hi all, Just wanted to post some quick impressions regarding the Odin. I heard of this Russian cans receiving some kind of cult following in France but being virtually unknown anywhere else. Living in Paris I was lucky enough to have my local dealer stocking it up, and upon seeing it I felt in...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

Doc, I read your review while listening to the LCD-3, then the Elear on the same songs. And it struck me how you have nailed it when describing the uniqueness of their sound. Your conclusion is especially on point when it personifies the Elear as an authoritarian figures that commands you into...

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

It's true that I keep switching primarily between these two headphones: they're very different, and each brings me joy. Thé P9 is more versatile though, as I can carry it outside and listen straight from a smartphone. However if you're planning to use them at home only, this point is moot.

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

The Elear is more dynamic and punchy, the P9 goes lower and has more finesse. For classic/jazz/rock I would recommend the P9, you would head more details in the music. It's a bit softer than the Elear.

    Aëdle ODS-1 In-Ear

It's been a little more than two months for me with the ODS-1 since I received my pair. Back in 2013 I bought the VK-1, the first headphone from Aëdle. I have spent some quality time with it, loving the delicate, intricate sound, but ultimately ending up giving them to my then-girlfriend because...

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

I have the regular E17 and it drives the P9...in an average fashion. The sound is fine, a bit better than on my Xiaomi phone (which is itself much better than the ****ty iPhone DAC), but not by much. My Burson Conductor is much better. The P9 has a lot of headroom and scales really well with...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

I have both, the TH-900 has an amazing bass but is very shouty in comparison. The Elear sounds much more natural, on all frequencies. No debate for me, Elear wins hands down.

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

I just impulse bought the P9 Signature, they were too beautiful.   I will let them warm up and post more detailed impressions later, but oh my god do these cans sound incredible. Plugged on a Burson Conductor these are an absolute joy. The bass goes so low on a slow electronica track it...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

Great review, I found myself agreeing with you all of the way! You really nailed what the sound of the Elear is like.

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

I completely agree. The performance delta when paired with a more portable amp is really massive. I find the Elear to still sound detailed and musical, but much less dynamic, much less punchy. When you say "It does the bass head punchy thing while still giving you world class mids and treble" I...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

For me the Elear is fully deserving of the TOTL status. It's not as much 'is it the company's flagship heaphone?' rather than 'does the sound compare favorably to other companies' flagship headphones?', which is clearly the case. Nevertheless, yes the 3.5mm adapter is an annoying omission.

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

I agree with you, the amp sensitivity is very high on the Elear. I just tried it on my WA8 Eclipse amp that stays at my office, and it's also glorious. Maybe even more detailed than on my WA7 (the DAC is also way better on the WA8), if only a bit less punchy. But both tube setups make the...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

It sounds much more better for me on my WA7 tube amp than on my Burson solid state. Not night and day but it's not the same headphone.

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

All the cans in my signature :) Some are less than €1000 (HE-560, SR-507), some closer to €2000 (LCD-3, LCD-XC, Ether C, TH-900, SR-L700), and to me the Elear is arguably better than all of them, except the SR-L700.   Clearly if the Utopia was €2000 I would have thought twice before buying...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

Soundstage is definitely bigger on the TH-900, but seems more artificial, cavernous-like. Imaging is great but everything seems to come from the sides.   Elear sounds much more open and immerses you more in the music. Due to the added dynamism to the music, imaging is more pronounced that on...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

I agree with the above comments. The Elear really is a very versatile headphone, sure you can find some cans that do better in this or that area, but in terms of overall performance and ability to play everything with a natural and effortless touch, the Elear is unbeaten for me by any sub-2000...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

OK, so I just spent some time with the TH900 and the Elear, both plugged on my WA7tp with upgraded tubes (I found that they both sound better on this amp).   I mainly listen to EDM, a genre where both headphones are supposed to excel, but for good measure I also played some rock, jazz and...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

SQ seems really fine, I haven't tried other cables tough (but it should be really easy since it's standard mini-jack). Build quality is like a tank: the cable feels really solid in the hand, does not curl and has absolutely no microphonics. For me the length is a godsend: I can listen to the...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

I'll do a real Elear / TH-900 A/B testing tonight and will post here the results, but as I said in my previous post the Elear, with its lush, laid-back signature, leans more towards the Audeze house sound than the Fostex one. But the Elear is more transparent than the Audeze, and more open up...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

I have the 2013 LCD-3, non-Fazored, so we are not comparing exactly the same headphone to the Elear. I would assume the 2016 LCD-3 to be better (especially as you say in terms of treble), although some said they prefer the classic version (I haven't heard the Fazor one).   For me the main...

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

Not even close for me. The Fostex has an incredible bass but the Elear's, while different, is at least just as good, and the rest is just so much better. Plus the TH-900 is a bit shouty.

I hope you'll enjoy them but have little doubt, they are so versatile.

    Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

I have both the LCD-3 (classic version) and the Elear. I love my LCD-3 for the same reasons that you do, but the Elear is to me clearly superior: the sound is more coherent, less muddy, the treble more extended. The bass is maybe less punchy but goes down lower, and seems to englobe you more in...
