    Why portable amps?

    Why portable amps?

If I only could find a mains-driven amp that is better than the $50 or something I spent on PA2V2... Maybe in the higher segments it could be possible but I doubt it in this price bracket at least. Portability implies that you can bypass costly solutions for a truly stable power supply...

Headphones that sound most like Sonus Faber or B&W speakers

I'm also a big fan of what B&W's larger gear can bring forth. It is like listening to large horns without the coloration if you know what I mean. Their super-clean sound somehow makes things resonate throuhgout the sound spectrum, a quality that is hard to describe. All I can say is that I...

What are the best portable closed headphones in the market

I cannot say what would be "the best", but I found what I searched for in Beyerdynamics DT-250. Very neutral sounding, non-fatiguing pleasant sound to my ears, also with a nice firm bass kick. Always use them amped, they lose too many qualities unamped IMO. Build quality is very good for...

No, I haven't. Looks neat though. Have you found something that it does better or worse than the alternatives, what are the really strong areas?

    best sounding unamped headphone?

Koss PortaPro sounds great with most sources, unamped. IMO as always of course.

Improving the stock Koss PortaPro's sound&soundstage via DSP

Thank you for providing all this info, OP! Koss PortaPro has a well-deserved place in my collection. Not too long ago I learned about what a cable change can do to what they deliver, now this info that may improve things even further. I can't help but feel deeply impressed by what can be...

    Creative Xmod

I did some more testing today, using more complex/intense input: Dimmu Borgir [In Sorte Diaboli, etc]. Now it is even more clear that the Xmod cannot project a descent soundstage on its own through the headphone jack, at least not with the Beyerdynamics 250-80. No headroom at all, everything...

    Creative Xmod

Thanks Jade, should have thought of that. I was a little discouraged from the spec for Creatives optional power supply, 1A @ 5V which gave me a higher indication. Around 100 mA wouldn't be a problem of course.

    Creative Xmod

That thought crossed my mind as well, Jade. This thing should be just as portable as it looks. It would be nice to have a ballpark figure about Xmods current draw to select reasonable cells (if feasible at all), anyone having a clue here?

Just to be clear: my positive views on the Chrystalizer processing applies to lower quality mp3's primarily. For higher bitrate recordings it tends to exaggerate the ends of the spectrum and is better left deactivated, just as you say.

    Creative Xmod

I have tried the Xmod and totally love what it does. I quickly found that the 3D enhancer made more harm than good for me, always leaves it off. The Chrystalizer was much more to my liking, if adjusted to the minimum position. Here I find that it does a very good job in cleaning up the sound...

    DT770-80ohm + PA2V2 = not what I expected

I see myself as a recovering bass addict, still having my preferences to rather bass heavy music. I have only tested the dt770-250 version with PA2v2 and was not satisfied with the result, they sounded much too thin and hollow to my ears. This was no surprise since the 250 ohm version requires...

    PA2V2- $60 shipped

Just wanted to add some "little thought of" aspects, the vast improvements is SQ aside. Garys unit is very well built, like a tank. I have dropped it into hardwood and stone floors several times by accident, nothing happened. The worst accident implied nothing more than to open it up an make...

    I want a custom headphone!

If you want something closed, durable with deep firm bass and good detail, you can also consider Beyerdynamics DT250-80 which is fairly easy to drive. There is also a 250 ohm version which is considered even better sounding by some people. DT250 has a rather sleek and anonymous, non-dorky look...

    ipod/PA2V2... worth it?

I don't know what iPods can deliver in terms of SQ and power, but if they are anything like iRiver iFP-799 you may find differences like these with amps like PA2V2: - moderately sensitive headphones like Beyerdynamics DT250-80 benefit just as much IMHO from the amp as headphones with high...

    FEELING the music...IEMs the answer?

Beyerdynamics DT250-80 was the first headphone that made me feel the music in my body. I was so stunned over the effect that I started a thread about it, http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=166508 Judging from the responses in that thread it doesn't seem very common to be able to...

What are the cans that exceeded your expectations ?

Koss PortaPro. First they blew me away in the shop, much more to my liking than Grado Sr-60 for instance and much cheaper. Then they continued to blow me away, making me listening through my entire record collection. Absolutely incredible performance for the price! A few years after I bought...
