Dubstep Girl's Massive 5AR4/5R4/5U4G Rectifier Review/Comparison! (Rectifer Tube Rolling thread)
====================================================== After chasing and reading many of the tube rolling reports bunch of "crazy" guys in form of @wisnon, @christoph, David and myself decided to do a quite big session of tube rolling of both rectifier and DHT tubes used in Lampi DACs. As we...- wisnon

Dubstep Girl's Massive 5AR4/5R4/5U4G Rectifier Review/Comparison! (Rectifer Tube Rolling thread)
I have to say that the Kron RK 5u4g is a killer rectifier. Outside of the uber expensive Takatsuki and vintage Western Electric, this for me is the TOP recti out there. I use it in a Lampizator Dac.- wisnon

Astro, the AMR is a lovely Dac but it is not a discrete R2R resistor ladder dac. It uses a TDA multibit chip and small triode output tube. This is more comparable to the old Lampi Level4/5 Dacs. The CH Precision uses BurrBrown 1704 multibit chips. Basically, the latter 2 are CHIPPED designs...- wisnon

Astro, you have to note what type of PCM these German guys have. I myself had R2R since a year ago and a month ago it returned with a firmware upgrade for the Ladder and it cuts the gap to DSD considerably. You saw the Customer Dac shootout from Fla that I posted. That was all PCM. Look at the...- wisnon

Is it Balanced? If so no 2a3 or 300b in Bal mode. I SE mode, all can be used in the back row. I think Tube Depot in the US has 6A3 reasonably priced. AL had a good cheap source at one time. Heblives ghe Sylvania Greenleaves and the Tungsol. Others swear by the VT52..which is a similar tube. On...- wisnon

Paul, the Nagra Dac is very vey good as well. Had a demo evening with it last year at Stenheims in Switzerland. The only obvious weakness is the lack of DHT tube rolling like in the Lampi. DHTs are magic.- wisnon

I hated the hugo, but think the DAVE is very very good. Though I prefer my Lampi Golden Gate (most musical and tonally accurate dac out there), the DAVE i CONCEDE is a serious player. The Yggy is only "good" in my humble opinion. Enjoy the purchase. Rob finally delivered to my expectations. I...- wisnon

Lampi has R2R discrete ladder PCM and delta sigma PCM. The Delta sigma seems to have been in constant development and is about on par with the discrete Ladder version, I am told. Most of the recent online prauises have been for the discrete ladder, but with the leap ahead of the DS version, I am...- wisnon

Just the opposite. I can point you to 1500 albums recorded NATIVELY in DSD (SA_CD.net has the info). Cant do the same for PCM, as the vast majority were done with a delta sigma ADC and so were DSD-ized to start with. Sure many DSD non native albums came from tape transfers or had PCM processing...- wisnon

Dave will have a switch where you can freely select the filter you want, either the WTA 164K taps or the one optimized for DSD 82K tap length (half sized, but lower latency and smoother sounding for non-decimated DSD). Any format will play with either, but there is a clear recommendation.- wisnon

Rob,Thanks for the fast reply. No decimation sounds very promising. DAVE already does very well with Pcm for the 25 mins or so I spent with it. Kudos...it is clearly a cut or 3 above Hugo.- wisnon

Dave, I am far from the only person saying this about MQA. It is clearly for improving streaming and other than that, I dont hold out much hope. Feel free to think that DSD is fundamentally flawed, thoufgh I suspsect you may never have heard DSD done right (likely heard DSd in PCM drag)...- wisnon

If its so great, then how comes that everytime its demoed, they never do old version vs MQA version? IT is really only for quality streaming. I fear you are setting yourself up for disappointment. There was nothing earth shattering in tmy MQA demo. If you want (relatively) earth...- wisnon

MQA is for quality streaming. It has NOTHING over a home HD setup where space costs little for the full High rez music. I have heard MQA and didnt find anything special. As for all those who think DSD is flawed, try to get to hear it on a quality DSD Dac that does it right. ..like chipless...- wisnon
