    PCB trace capacitor/resistor

I've noticed on an RJ45/8P8C socket that the tracks are arranged as capacitors on some of the pins. Layout would be roughly like if you spread your fingers on each hand apart and brought them together without touching. I've also seen on circuit boards of some devices I/O lines have a section of...

    Which multimeter ?

Hi guys   Haven't been around in a while. Been so time poor lately haven't really had time for any DIY, let alone music and even headphones.   Anyway, my meter has kicked the bucket, so I'm in the market for a new one.   I did have a Protek one that had a heap of features...

    Leaning towards DT880s

Okay well, to sum up my journey so far. When I was much younger my first headphones were Sony DR-V150, fairly average headphones but not awful. Learnt for the first time to not got inline volume control and also how to cut it out and solder it all back together.   Eventually when...

    Survey flaws

Just filled out a survey, strange that I did one but that's beside the point, I thought I'd point out what I consider a bit of a flaw.   I was asked things like how much I would spend or am planning to spend on headphones and also my income.   What denomination is it ?   My guess...

    Dual Polarity Power Supply

Been a while since I lurked around here.   Anyway, been going through projects I have built or will build and have noticed I am lacking in power supplies, need them for existing and future projects, so I've decided to sort them out first instead of my typical backwards approach.  ...

    Electro Pop, any suggestions

Well if anyone likes these sort of genres, not all of the below are from that genre... but I've found 90% of electronic music what I listen to is Electro Pop or French House or maybe just House... I dunno. Was wondering if there were any artists to recommend. I like: Cut Copy Van She Van...

    MS-1 glue ?

Okay well, what glue should be used to put MS-1s back together ? I was thinking maybe hot melt glue... but the one I have at least has a really quick set time, so I don't see me being able to stick them back together before it hardens. I was thinking maybe araldite as that's strong +...

Back emf protection on a single coil latching relay

As the title says, how would you provide back emf protection on a relay if it's a single coil latching, so that the coil polarity is reversed to change states ? I'm really confusing myself thinking about it, as what I keep thinking up would pretty much put a short across the coil.

    Ladyhawke

Anyone have a listen to her debut album ? I'm really liking it, seems a bit short, but there's not really much filler imho. Very synth heavy but I like it, reminds me of some 80s artists but she seems to be able to pull it off with the songs more inspired than tributes. My favourite...

Can anyone recommend stuff similar to Major Lance, Dion, The Temptations etc.

Being such a youngin I don't really have much of a clue when it comes to this sort of music. But I like some of the more well known songs which are classics I guess, Runaround Sue, Build Me Up Buttercup, My Girl... those sort of songs. Sort of different but I stumbled accross "Pure Essence...

Good op-amp for an input buffer ?

I'd typed up a pretty long post but then my computer crashed and I lost it so I'll keep it more to the point. My op-amp knowledge is really patchy to almost non-existent at times so please bear with me. For a project I'm just getting off the ground I want to use an input buffer so that the...

    Some pot help please ?

Okay, well me being the collector of trash I got some old Hitachi power amp cheap, opened her up and nothing all that special, anyway. She doesn't work, just get a significant amount of hum and nothing else. I have taken it upon myself to fix her, now, there is actually something noticeably...

    Vinyl popping and static

How do I get rid of it ? I expect a certain amount, but it's a bit over the top at the moment. I've heard some recordings of vinyl and I honestly cannot tell except for maybe a slight pop or two at the very end of the side. The turn table is vintage so may need to check everything is setup...

    Putting MS-1s back together...

Took one of the earcups apart as it seemed there was a piece of hair floating around in there, they're long out of warranty and I didn't want them out of commission for ages. Anyway, errr... do you use hot melt glue to get it back together ? That seems like the most logical choice but I'm...

Can you get an upright case ?

Just wondering if anyones see a case that could stand upright a la PS2/Wii ? Sort of contrary to the hi-fi convention of stacking gear, but I was thinking that for a phono pre-amp with my setup it might actually be nicer to have the pre-amp sitting vertically next to the turntable as I don't...

JVC JL-A3 TT, and how do you remove old rubber ?

Well I just got as a present a not working vintage JVC JL-A3 turntable, just wondering if anyone has heard anything about these and basically how much it would be worth getting to work ? Everything else seems to work but I'd have to try it I guess, I think it's a model from the mid 70s and...

    Eargasms...

Well a certain post got me thinking, how do YOU define an eargasm and what causes them ? For me a few times in my life I've been listening to music and I get shivers down my spine and almost border on spasming from it... or maybe I'm just having a seizure... But anyway, I've found it's...

Adding an aux input to a cheapo cd player

Yeah by no means hi-fi, just one of those dirt cheap cd players with a handle that are semi portable. Anyway, it's just one that get's thrashed at work and I want to with some spare RCA connectors stick an aux input into it. Just wondering, does anyone know where to feed it into, the radio...

EAC can't access freedb server ?

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem recently or it's just an issue on my end... it comes up with an error "Can't access host". AFAIK, host is the server, I'm the client... so seems like the freedb server is down. Anyway thought I'd ask here as I know quite a few use it.

Looking for a song that's on many movies

Well not me but a friend is after a song that is in a lot of movies... I know it when I hear it. Thought I'd ask here as surely someone would know. It's on the The Beach trailer... Anyway... describing it in words is kind of hard. Like a build up of some instrument not sure what...

    capacitor voltage rating in SMPS

Well just thought I'd pass this by those more knowledgeable. Anyway I was looking at a SMPS schematic and I noticed that the capacitors in the capacitor inductor network are specified at 50V, even though a zener diode further 'back' limited the voltage to 24V. Now I was just wondering, is...

    Luxman D-111

Okay well I am in possession of a faulty one. Made in '88 apparently according to the web If I'm reading manufacturing dates correctly. Anyway, is it worth putting much effort into fixing it, ie. anyone listened to one and what do you think ? I don't really have much else in the way of...

    Learner bike ?

Now I do realise this ain't exactly a bike forum, but as always there seems to be people around here into something... anything... Anyway, I'm thinking of getting into motorbikes. Just wanted to ask a few questions. I have my sights set on an oldish Honda CB250, is that a good bike for a...

Are CD cases too weak ?

I know some here may not experience it as they're anal and make sure to polish their cases every night. However I personally really think cd cases are weak and pathetic when they actually get a tiny bit of stress put on them. I had an album ordered in and it shipped by ground, part of...
