The female 3.5mm jack on the headphone cup is replaced with a new one that is wired for balanced. The 3 pole cable is then needed to transmit the balanced signal to the headphone jack. At the other end of that cable you could have any number of balanced amp connectors.

You haven't heard Argons at their fullest until you've hooked them up to an Emotiva A100 (slightly biased) :) These cans loooove power
