Monolith by Monoprice Tube Headphone Amplifier with ESS Sabre DAC (29511)
I was born in 1963. I remember the TVs of the pre-solid-state days. Lots of tubes, ran hot, and had less ventilation than this amp. From that, I doubt airflow/cooling will be a problem.- kphooligann

MiniDSP HA-DSP Discussion and Impressions
I'm surprised there aren't more post on this promising headphone amp also. But, I'd like to see a touch screen user interface and the ability to store say about 25 different correction curves. Because I have four pairs of headphones on my desk now with others elsewhere in the house. It'd be...- kphooligann

Is the Fostex T50RP Fatiguing? Or Is the NAD D3020 Headphone Out Fatiguing
I'm aware of the differences between Class A and Class D. But, I believe the Class D power amplification circuitry on the NAD D3020 drives the speaker outputs only. It probably uses an operational amplifier for the headphone out. From the objectivist standpoint I should hear no difference? I...- kphooligann

Is the Fostex T50RP Fatiguing? Or Is the NAD D3020 Headphone Out Fatiguing
I've listened to my T50RP's through my NAD D3020 and my Audeze Deckard. Through the NAD I found the T50RP's to be very fatiguing. Yet through the Deckard not fatiguing at all. I haven't noticed this with other headphones I own such as the Audioquest Nighthawks or Sennheiser HD 700's. Has...- kphooligann

With external DAC, speakers recommend? computer speakers or studio monitors?
Another internet direct option is the Aperion Audio Allaire Bluetooth Speakers. These speakers could be connected by 3.5 mm from the Geek Out 450 to the speaker pair by one cable, no spliter required. They cost about $400, get good reviews and have a sub out for future expansion. Aperion...- kphooligann

Advice please on my next headphone purchase. Love my HD598's so I'm looking for a sealed analogue to them.
I stream exclusively. My computer is linked via usb cable to an NAD D3020. I use Spotify mostly but sometimes Classical Archives or Hearts of Space. I listen to Jazz, Bluegrass, Classical, Lounge, and Space Music. My budget is $150 to $300, maybe, more like to $200. It depends on what's...- kphooligann

Advice please on my next headphone purchase. Love my HD598's so I'm looking for a sealed analogue to them.
My current headphone collection consists on the HD 598's, a pair of seriously old Grado SR80's, a Fostex T50RP, and, for portable listening Phillips Fidelio M1's. These are the ones I'm listening to lately at least. Of all of them I like the Senns the best. The Fostex and Grado models fatigue...- kphooligann

Headphone recommendations for a budget consumer?
I recently bought a pair of Tascam TH-02 headphones. They cost about $30. They have very good sound for the money. But, they feature a 10' cable. These phones are suited more for larger heads. So, those of us with small ones might have to wear a baseball cap while listening to these. Check out...- kphooligann

Need help interpreting pro reviews of DACs.
Thank You MalVeaux, I thought DACs might not contribute much to the sound of a system. Because, as you state, the same chipsets show up in DACs of all different prices. And, I agree that analog stages must contribute more to the sound of a system. I guess the moral of the story is not...- kphooligann

Need help interpreting pro reviews of DACs.
I have to ask, "Has the community of pro hifi writers and critics ever met a DAC they did not LOVE?" Seems to me that I have not read a review that panned a DAC. So, what's up with that? Can they all be not good but very very good? I doubt it. So, please if you know of a pro review that...- kphooligann

How I spoiled hi-fi for myself
For what is worth, I had an audio salon owner confide in me once, that most of his "high end" purchases were by doctors, lawyers, and "indian chiefs". Also that all most of them were looking for was compliments on their taste in audio gear. They were looking to boost their egos with expensive...- kphooligann

++ FULL-SIZE HEADPHONE RECOMMENDATIONS THREAD++ CLOSED: Please post a thread in the Introductions, Help and Advice forum
Hello All, I'd like some thoughts on a pair of 'phones before I buy. The JBL TMG81 is the set in question. I've read elsewhere that these are similar or identical to the AKG K520. Anyone know if this is true? These will be used with an iPhone, w/o an amp, for jazz, downbeat, and lounge...- kphooligann

Got a Load of Questions about DACs & Computer Based Sound Systems
Thank You Currawong, Thank you for your answers. I have one more question. Is the following statement true, false, or neither: "In MP3 audio, a red book CD pcm signal can be encoded into one of several MP3 bitstreams, such as 32, 64, 96, or 128 kbs. Upon decoding, a pcm signal having...- kphooligann

Got a Load of Questions about DACs & Computer Based Sound Systems
Thank You cel4145, I'm sure the Sound on Sound article will go well with the YouTube video by Longbottomrx titled Mp3 Encoding and Decoding and a diagram of "MP3 Audio" I found at analog.com in their A Beginner's Guide to DSP . Got a Load of Questions about DACs & Computer Based Sound Systems
Thank You ClieOS, I ran into a reference to Nyquist Shannon during my web searches to answer my own questions. I guess I'm skeptical of it because I doubt I could understand the proof. After pre-Calculus my math grades dropped like a rock. But, I'm willing to believe it rather than...- kphooligann

Got a Load of Questions about DACs & Computer Based Sound Systems
Thank You Chodi, I'm not complaining, just defending question 3. Well, let's say the upper limit of human hearing is 15 kHz. Let's then round 44.1 kHz to 45 kHz. So now, we sample a sound signal, which can be modeled as the superposition of many pure tone sine waves upon one another at 3...- kphooligann

Got a Load of Questions about DACs & Computer Based Sound Systems
I'm somewhat of a relic of an audio enthusiast or audiophile. I got my start with a turntable based system I bought with money earned as a paperboy about 35 years ago. But I think I have some questions about MP3 and wav playback that others may have as well. Here they are: 1) Will a good...- kphooligann

Goldring DR150 vs. Grado
At the risk of reviving a dead thread, I'll throw in my two cents worth as a DR150 owner and user. I am also a Grado SR80 owner. SInce I bought my DR150's the SR80's have been collecting dust. I don't understand why this 'phone doesn't get more respect or press. Maybe because one can pay...- kphooligann
