Curse you, Redwine!
you guys really don't wanna reduce sample rate, do you? For a start, this will mean resampling the files, introducing quantization errors.. there goes some of your 'lossless' right there! ..Just because your ears can only hear to 18khz, doesn't mean you can cut the sound off at that frequency...- drminky

EQ question(S)
Be careful with adjusting eqs. With modern recordings, there is usually little headroom left to be boosting anything, especially in the bass. These days, engineers tend to compress the hell out of everything to get the level as hot as they possibly can without clipping. Why? Because its louder...- drminky

GRADOs (especially SR-225) good for electronica?
I agree that djShadow should sound pretty good on grados, however I feel they are not the best choice for most electronic music. Whereas they rock for, well,..rock and guitars in particular when I have tried them with electronica I have not been left overly impressed. The highs are far too...- drminky

MuFi Tri-Vista DAC?
I've had this dac for over a year now. It really is a nice dac and I've been very happy with it. It is capable of putting out a very nice sound, and you can pick them up for a good price second hand these days. I find the dac to be quite a neutral one, its not overtly warm in the same way as...- drminky

Soundstage Question: Is this normal?
I think its just a personal thing. For me the soundstage tends to come from above me. Its as if the sound was eminating from right across the headband of my headphones, rather than the drivers. Its pretty wierd, but I'm used to it now. I think its got to do with the shape of your head.- drminky

a semiportable electrostatic system?
Wow! I guess the Omega2 is an option as well (It would sure look less 'dorky' and more 'bling' in the office than a lambada! ). I've been lusting after one of those Omegas ever since I first put my head into it's luxurious embrace. I suppose the dark-on-dark presentation might be an issue...- drminky

a semiportable electrostatic system?
Thanks for that catscratch, the 005 system is definitely a contender for me. I only worried that the recessed treble of the sr003 combined with the recessed treble of the 212 amp would make for an extremely dark presentation. As I've had my sennheisers for a while now, I was trying to avoid...- drminky

a semiportable electrostatic system?
As a freelancer, I tend to move around quite a bit for work. Unfortunately, that means living without my much loved home rig for extended periods of time. I've been wanting to set up a nice semi-portable rig for a long time to alleviate my suffering. (By semi-portable I mean easy to drag around...- drminky

At what point does it become necessary to use lossless codecs?
If I were in your position, I would pay for the cheap mp3s, listen to them for a bit on your ipod/dap/whatever when on the bus/train/work etc. If you really like the music and know you will love it for a long time, go out and buy the cd (or vinyl). That way, you've always got a hardcopy that...- drminky

tubed cd-player to tubed amp redundant?
You would think that having tubes in both the source and the amp might overwhelm the sound with overblown tube colouration, low extension, sloppy bass etc, however in practise this is not really the case. Tubes in one component seem to complement other tubes in the chain, and the result is a...- drminky

Lubricating MMF-5 bearing
AFAIK, the best oil to use is synthetic racing oil, as it has none of the additives that are put in to most motor oil to give the inside of the engine protective coating. Mobil 1 0W40 is the most oft recommended oil for turntables (and used by the likes of michell, teres etc) cheers, warwick- drminky

Room Dynamics: Make a Huge Difference!
Well, I shipped my system across the world, so the exact same system has been set up in two very different rooms. In England, it lived in a large carpeted living room of a ground floor victorian flat. Thick, solid walls and floors in that 'they don't build-em like they used to' kinda way. It... -
Ever question your headphone preferences after hearing good loudspeakers?
I definitely get that feeling. Good speakers are so effortless to listen to compared to most headphones. There is also the comfort factor, the lack of brain fatigue and claustrophobic headspace. With speakers that image really well, the sheer scale of the soundstage is awe inspiring and...- drminky

Whats the verdict on Coldplay's X&Y
Is it just me or does it sound a little too much like latter-day U2? Has that same overproduced watered-down 'blandness' quality to it..maybe it'll grow on me, but on first listen has none of the rawness and intimacy that Chris Martin achieved on the Faultine album 'Your Love Means Everything'... -
