I just received the HiFiMAN EF2 today and for $200 I'm about ready to stop at that. With my HD580s I'm pretty close to where I want to be sound wise without spending more then I need to.

Are looking for just an amp or do you need one with a DAC built in also?

I also fiddled around with placement on my HD580s and noticed the same thing. I have the back of the pads just barely touching the backs of my ears. Just sounds better that way to me.

My Senn HD580s with iBasso D3. Can only imagine the improvement with a desktop amp.

If you are looking to spend that much somewhere around the 1K range you could get the Pico DAC and Woo Audio WA6 amp with power supply upgrade. If I upgrade in the future that is the route I will be going.

Thanks for the responses. I went ahead and ordered the EF2. I guess I'll burn it in alone and with the D3 DAC and swap in some 6AK5s later. Then I will report my results. Guess in the end I'm looking for one unit to have on my desk but if I'm not happy here the next step will be Pico...
