Class A Portable Headphone Amp
After all, the Cosmic already encroaches on the $1000 mark, and if this guy can challenge the Max at 55% of the cost, along with the benefit of being transportable, it may be worth doing, and a good value.- Odeen

My computer is fried
ai0tron - Peltier coolers are fine and dandy, but remember that they are _heat pumps_ - they take heat from one side and transfer it to the other side. And the other side you need to cool (again). Peltiers were popular on older chips (say, the infamous Celeron 366) that didn't put out quite...- Odeen

Chych, I hope you realize that you are now _obligated_ to buy the CD3000's you won. An eBay winning bid is an agreement to buy the item you bid on.- Odeen

Which headphones sound good at low volume levels?
The HD590's, despite the shrill highs and a cold midrange, retain a lot of their sound quality at very low levels, even when driven by a lowly Total Airhead. That's probably one of their best features, actually..- Odeen

Lowest Prices on High-end cans?
These are international or US-based dealers, I don't know about canada... They should ship to Canada, though. HD600's: $220 (for a limited time only) at www.meier-audio.com CD3000's: $399 at www.millionbuy.com (last time I checked) RS-1's: Can be had for $500, I think... But without a...- Odeen

External PCDP power supply?
You can also buy a 6-volt lead-acid battery, a "gel cell", attach a Radio Shack tip to it, and use it to power your CDP. I don't know if it's the super-consistent voltage, or the 6-volt supply, but my Panasonic SL-SX510 benefited immensely from a gel cell.- Odeen

Cheap closed headphone comparison: Most of them SUCK!
Eagle Driver - Only Grado's have cord problems that you describe. Since Denon's earcups don't rotate, I had more knots in the joined part of the cord (due to me stuffing all of it in a backpack pocket) than any tangles in the split part. They're reasonably comfy, too... your ears shouldn't...- Odeen

Best Soundtrack to Computer/Console Game?
Jude, since you bought a copy of Mech2 at some point, I'm pretty sure you still have a license for it, which would make it legal for you to have a copy... if you want, send me a PM, I'll burn you a copy of my CD. -Alex -
Best Soundtrack to Computer/Console Game?
Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack. Slightly techno-ish yet very lush and orchestral score (Think: Hybrid with that Russian symphony orchestra at 1/2 speed and 1/2 energy). Obviously "tracked" in MIDI, it doesn't sound like it was performed live, but the melodies are to die for. I just tracked down a... -
Cheap closed headphone comparison: Most of them SUCK!
Why not the greatest $50 phones in the world, IMHO, the Denon AH-D210's? They're supra-aural, but closed. And I noticed that they provided more noise isolation than the circumaural Sony MDR-CD570 I replaced them with after the plug broke. -Alex- Odeen

Panasonic CT590...
Wait... Leaving pause out of the remote for a non-LCD-on-base unit is stupid! If you're not supposed to use the base unit except to change CD's - shouldn't ALL functionality be on the remote? My D-777 doesn't have pause, but it has the spot-on resume... which works just as well. Perhaps...- Odeen

Best sounding portable CD player?
The best PCDP I've ever heard is a Denon DCP-150, with my Sony D-777 being second. The Denon, though, is heavy, runs on impossible-to-find batteries (but can run off of external power), and has zero anti-skip It does have a full IR remote, and a massively overbuilt power supply. With coax...- Odeen

Help Vij....
Neruda, I listened to the CD3000's, and they seem to have a dip in the midbass, which makes the low bass sound like it doesn't really "belong" there. Perhaps that's the looseness you heard?- Odeen

Sony MDR-DS8000: 6.1-ch headphone
Does anyone remember how it was possible to set up 3 networked computers to run DOOM, with one displaying front view, one displaying right and one displaying the left view, for your own personal VR system? _THAT_ the Gyrotrack would rule for. Of course, no 3d sound in DOOM....- Odeen

Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm Magma - Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh and 1001degrees Centigrades Riot On Old Street (Acid Jazz compilation) Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack (Don't laugh, it's easily among the top 10 video game soundtracks of all time) Death unto all infidels, in oil... -
Brief Review: Apheared's CMoy variant #42
PPL - is it possible to use an 825 as a drop-in replacement for the 823, or must wiring be reconfigured for the other op-amp? Having a choice in the sound would seem awesome. Aside from less battery life, are there any disadvantages in paralleling 4 EL2001's as opposed to only two, or one per...- Odeen

Audigy officially announced
I always thought that the pitch (and the rest of the aspects of the sound) was controlled by the contents of the 16-bit word, and sampling rate was merely how often the words were reproduced or captured.. So, if you play back at a higher sample rate, each 16-bit "sound" would be heard not for...- Odeen

EVERY DirectX-compatible soundcard must resample digital input internally to 48khz. Otherwise it won't conform to the mixing specs specified by Microsoft, and it won't be a DirectX-compatible card... But why not add some sort of a de-interpolation mechanism to the DAC that can do specific...- Odeen
