Quote:   Ah, glad you got the wiring sorted out.  Sorry I flaked - got completely swamped last couple days unfortunately.

Kickin, here's what I've collected so far, mostly right cup unfortunately:   http://s31.photobucket.com/user/zhyla_/library/Somic%20EFI-82MT?sort=3&page=1   I will take the left cup apart tonight if I get a chance.  Though if you look close I'm sure you can see where the wires ripped off...

Quote:     1.  As long as they're properly strain relieved I'm not too worried about this.  Might as well recable if/when they break, no real point in doing it now.     2.  I haven't had this issue, though I've only done a full disassembly twice.  I hate screws in plastic.  It's...

Quote:   That surprises me.  Both because I didn't find much difference with the big holes I drilled in the caps and also because Somic clearly designed those vents in there and decided they should be covered with tape.  A lot of design/effort for something that sounds better without the...

Drilled out part of the logo area on the caps.  No perceptible difference.  It's an easy mod to test out cause you can just plug the holes with your fingertips.  Not enough material removed to do anything.         As I was marking where my drill holes were going a little shadow...

Ok, took Cash's advice.  Yes, the isolation is much lower.  It took me a while to figure out that I was hearing birds singing and not some super subtle audio on whatever track I was listening to.   Unfortunately without that cover piece these headphones don't really hold themselves together...

Can you compare the isolation between stock 82 and open back 82?  I'm sure we're all interested in a general comparison but I am hoping opening up the backs reduces the isolation significantly.   ETA:  darn you Cash, it's your fault I have to disassemble these things so frequently :).

What are we looking at here?  You've cut off the outside of the cups?  And used adhesive to secure the drivers so they don't fall out?

I got curious about what other Somic headphones are out there besides the EFI-82MT and the MH-463.  There are hundreds of models on their website but I went thru and found the other models with 50mm drivers.  Both of these can be had on Aliexpress for similar pricing ($30-40).  Just figured I'd...

Quote:   I looked at a listing that had 20 Hz - 20kHz/32 ohms listed in the specs but the box in the photo was identical to what I received (10 Hz - 28 kHz/64 ohms).  I suspect the listing's specs are just wrong.   Got my HM5 pads.  They fit the cups really well despite being oblong...

Quote:   No, they're at least cosmetically different.  The 463 thread has a pic of the drivers, they look quite different.   I do sort of want the 463's as well but some of the posts I read made it sound like the headband construction was really poor.  If I find the right price...

Quote:   I think so.  A belt sander would probably be the right tool for the job if you wanted to grind the outside grill down.  Otherwise you're going to be dremelling on the inside for a very long time... I'm interested to hear the result though.

Where can I get HM5 pads?  Amazon has the Shure pads but not the HM5.  And can anyone compare the two?  The HM5 look beefier and look like they fit well... right?

Experimented a little with augmenting the existing damping on the inside of the cups.  I don't have any dynamat type stuff but I had this thin, dense foam lying around... I think it was packing material for something important, can't really remember where it came from.  Seems appropriate for...

Like Xprime I couldn't leave well enough alone.  I wanted to avoid dealing with the the cloth damping's adhesive for repeated disassemblies so I ended up locating the screw holes and cutting the cloth over them.       Take out those 3 screws and you've got the whole shebang to look at...
