The time to rip depends on the quality of the rip that you need. I use nero recode and dvd dvcrypter and i think the time is decent for music videos and tv shows. I too ripped from Black adder goes forth and took me 30 minutes to get the rip.

Yeah there are several programs that will work to make the vidoes compatible but i honestly cant see the average consumer doing stuff like that. I expect to see a huge increase in videos offerred in itunes.
