Volume setting on player vs. amp

On a console, ideal gain structure is to set master and channel faders to 0 dBv and adjust the channel preamp so that the input signal peaks at 0 dBv. When using pink noise with this setup, set the output of the amps to be between 85-90 dB of output at one metre from the speaker with a SPL...

Advice Needed: Best Portable Headphone Amp for Pro Use

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. Living out of a suitcase on the road, so I haven't been able to post some of the manufacturer feedback I got. Once I get back home, I will post (took the iPhone and not the laptop out with me). And I haven't forgot my homework either, Kevin, I took the...

Advice Needed: Best Portable Headphone Amp for Pro Use

HA, For the first question, it will have to be a balance of the two. Obviously I would use my X-Cans at home, as it is a good desktop amp. On the road, I would, like I wrote earlier, be looking to use it for both the IEMs and the HD600 while mixing off my laptop. I would prefer that the...

Amp/Headphone combo for monitoring HD video audio

I love the sound of Schoeps shotgun mics, very nice choice. Not familiar with the sound of Sanken mics, but I think I know a few guys who use them. As with anything (including HPs and amps) try before you buy is a good mantra. The Fostex T20, like I said, are not thrilling to the ear. But...

Amp/Headphone combo for monitoring HD video audio

strawBoss, I may be able to give some advice having done a bunch location film/TV recording over the years (mostly years ago, though). I think you are overthinking your audio needs on the location rig. I haven't met a single location recordist that didn't either come directly out of the...

How much potential does a stock X-Cans v2 have once modded?

Thanks. Reading about his mods prior to posting makes me feel like I have a bad tube as I have one channel bleeding sound when the volume is turned all the way down.

How much potential does a stock X-Cans v2 have once modded?

To be honest, I haven't been shopping for a full-sized HP amp for just over a decade. That was when I was 19 and first decided to get some proper gear. In retrospect, I did a damn good job choosing, as to this day my choice of HP and amp has made me very happy after many years and training my...

What type of sound do you prefer in an in-ear headphone?

Balanced and neutral for me. I find that anything emphasized increases listening fatigue and unbalances my mix which will not "travel" well. Sometimes sizzle is good for the client, but not for the engineer. This applies to my speakers, my headphones, and my IEMs.

Advice Needed: Best Portable Headphone Amp for Pro Use

Hey Head-fiers, As a long-time reader of the forums and long time headphone fan, I registered last summer to do searches and lurk the forums. Some posters here have great ears and can separate hype from actual performance quite well (based on my own experiences with the gear they talk...
