    PX100 alternative in 2022

I've loved the PX100 from Sennheiser, and as they are not available anymore I am not aware of a quality alternative these days. HD650 for example are too much heavy and big, while they have similar sound signature. But are there any other light weight headphones with similar sound quality?

Sony wants MP3s to sound worse than ATRAC??

it seems that MP3 is the way to go if high bitrate is acceptable. And for an audiophile it must be. I guess I can't go wrong by encoding with lame and second highest quality setting, bitrate is about 256kbs..according to tests that should be better than atrac3+ at 356. And it's not tied to sony

Sony wants MP3s to sound worse than ATRAC??

I've read from many places over the net that sony is known to manipulate their players in such a way that ATRAC will sound better than MP3. Is this still true? I'm getting an NW-A806 -player which should support MP3, AAC, WMA and ATRAC3+ but I haven't found any information if they have changed...

    Clocks for a DAC

I was thinking about playing some samples of my own from flash memory..so basically I have to generate the clocks by myself. The bit clock would also be the bitclock for the flash chip. The Atmel dataflash chips have this great feature that they are just given an instruction to output data...

    Clocks for a DAC

I haven't been able to figure this out..I'd like to use a DAC chip PCM1770 from TI. The datasheet tells me that I need to supply System clock, 11.2896 MHz, Bit clock 32 x sampling frequency = 44100 * 32 =1.41MHz, and LR channel clock. I wonder how I'm supposed to generate those clocks. I can...

3gen nano vs sony 818 or some cowon...

Anyone who has Sony A8xx-series player can you tell me if it has this annoying feature I had on my sony portable CDP..a loud beep whenever you do something like skip a song or stop playing etc. I guess the engineers thought that it would be great feature..It was horrible on my CDP. I had the...

Need a low battery cutoff circuit

I think you could try to use a zener AND a JFET. That way any noise from the zener would fade away and when the voltage is too low, the JFET would disconnect the power

    How loud is too loud...

the loudness discomfort level is different for each individual and everyone should understand that. Levels that might be good for someone might damage others hearing. The dB guidelines for safety are just levels that seem to work for most people. Some people can take more noise, some less. I...

class A biasing kills battery life?

All the amps on tangent's site which have class a biasing are buffered amps. The mini3 doesn't have class a biasing AFAIK but it doesn't have a buffer. Is there anything to gain with class a biasing if using only a high current output opamp without any buffer? The bias current should be...

    capacitor in series

I'm just building a small Cmoy and I want to add a bass boost. I have only 1uF caps here and it's too large value. Will the bass boost work if I put two of these caps in series, 1uF + 1uF, will it be same as 0.5uF ? That way I could get the shelving frequency to 170-200Hz which should be OK.

    Digital volume controlls

I find the DS1802 to be excellent volume control. I don't hear any clicks or noise, it's great and easy to use, no need for any input or output cap.

    2 sided pcb for audio?

I am designing a layout for some school project..it's a mixer / EQ and has a lot of components..and 12 opamps! They want to manufacture 15 of them and the company that makes those boards and solders the components on them wants at least $2000 for the job. I have tried one of my previous...

Help me find my first soldering iron

I have both the aouye and xytronics version and I have to say that there is a big difference in built quality..materials..but still I think that the cheap chinese aouye is good for it's price..at least here in Finland you can get an aouye soldering station for $30. Xytronics is $200.

    2 sided pcb for audio?

If I built an amp with smd components, I can make it a lot smaller if I use both sides of the PCB. I can put the gain stage and other components on the top side and buffers on the bottom side. Is this somehow harmful to the audio signal, does it care a bit about things going on on the other...
