I got a reply from Shanling Liu on their YouTube short about this player, they confirmed that the anti-skip uses compression.

Is the anti-skip lossless? Or does it use ADPCM compression? FIIO has sorely disappointed me when it comes to the DM13

I certainly believe you, you’re not hiding it after all. If the DM13 and the Discdream 2 are using the same chip, would that mean that Moondrop is doing false advertising?

Now I'm just a little confused. Moondrop claim that both models of the discdream 2 have lossless ESP, which begs the question: how was Moondrop able to find lossless ESP chips and FIIO wasn't? Image is a screenshot from the Discdream 2 store page.

Thanks. I just realized that there might be some delay when switching the ESP on while a disc is playing. An easy way to test it might be to record the line out with audacity, first with the ESP on, then with it off.

Did you test it with ESP on? If not, do you mind doing an A/B test switching between off and on to see if you can tell any difference?

I hope so. I’ve never seen a review video or article of a portable CD player that talks about how its ESP works.

What about “it is recommended to turn off the ESP switch in non-mobile scenarios to get a better listening experience.”? I’m not well versed in Chinese, but I don’t see how that could be a mis-translation of Chinese for “ESP does not affect the sound quality”.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get my point across then. I guess I’m a little peeved that a company finally made a portable CD player that could play FLAC files from a disc, only to cheap out on a feature that should already be dirt cheap to implement properly.
