    Bit Perfect Audio from Linux

My first post offered some tools to narrow down issues with the audio path. If I use both pulse audio and ALSA, I want to make sure my music player uses ALSA and doesn't mix the sound. For me, this is my only concern. In your post #498 you are asking for proof that Linux offers bit-perfect...

    Bit Perfect Audio from Linux

I may not be able to answer the question fully, but there are several ways in Linux to see how your audio is handled. After you installed one of the audio players suggested at the beginning of this thread (plus perhaps Strawberry), you can do some checks to see how audio is handled: lsof...

    Bit Perfect Audio from Linux

Thanks for sharing the info. I just like to caution the readers: It's NOT a good idea to add external repositories. Some (many?) Linux distributions contain gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg in their standard repositories, so there is no need to add the above repository (my Linux Mint distribution does...

    Bit Perfect Audio from Linux

I'm running Linux Mint and gmusicbrowser and Rizlaw's instructions work. I tested it by playing a 24bit / 192kHz file and checked as follows (terminal command):   cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params   The above is for card 0, sub 0. Check with aplay -l which card (number) you need to...

    Bit Perfect Audio from Linux

@Rizlaw: great thread - many thanks, you really helped me out. I hope to be able to repay a little here.   My PC has 2 graphics cards, a USB sound card and an Asus Xonar STX. This can cause problems with the order in which the sound devices are assigned, so the numbering scheme you propose to...

Reply to review by 'powerhouse64' on item 'AKG K 142 HD High-Definition Headphones'

If you know the limitations, yes, they are perhaps a good deal. In retrospect I wouldn't recommend them on mobile devices, though my son is absolutely happy using them on an iPad or notebook.

    Bit Perfect Audio from Linux

Thanks to Rizlaw for the excellent instructions on getting bit perfect audio under Linux. I installed ALSA and totally removed pulseaudio.   My hardware is an Asus Xonar Essence STX and everything works fine, including the impedance selection and speaker/headphones switch. The onboard sound is...

The Xonar Essence STX Q/A, tweaking, impressions thread

Just for reference, I am using the Xonar Essence STX for nearly a year now on a Linux Mint PC. No issues whatsoever. I'm running Gmusicbrowser using ALSA in a bitperfect setup (here is how it's done: http://www.head-fi.org/t/561961/bit-perfect-audio-from-linux#post_7596268). The onboard sound is...

Please help me with my survey (about storage)

I'm using around 240 GB for my CD collection ripped to flac. This is stored on my PC and synced to my media center in a different room. My DVD/bluray rips consume much more space, around 2TB.   The media center and the desktop are both running Linux, for storage I use logical volumes (LVM...

Review by 'powerhouse64' on item 'Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO Closed Studio Headphones - 250 Ohms'

I've spent most of my life with open type cans. A year ago, after moving into an apartment, we decided to make some changes which necessitated me to get closed headphones. This way I would not disturb my wife and vice versa, I wouldn't be disturbed by the noise of others.   For various reasons...

    HD424 - nice vintage cans

I wish I had kept them. The darn pads evaporated and the cable needed replacement too. I loved those HD 424, got mine sometime 1978/79. Now I wouldn't mind buying them.

Review by 'powerhouse64' on item 'AKG K 142 HD High-Definition Headphones'

Intro: This is my first review here. I bought these headphones for my son who uses them mainly for gaming and some occasional music listening. I wanted to get him open or at least semi-open types so that he won't be acoustically isolated from his surroundings. I personally use the Beyerdynamic...

Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones Part II

I don't see why the title is off. A listener may or may not appreciate the fidelity of an audio system. There are some that really don't care. However, there are those that do hear a difference and also care about it. If they care enough they may become audiophiles.   Audiophile doesn't...

Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones Part II

My son had been wasting earphones like John Travolta had been wasting gangsters in the "From Paris with Love" movie. Fortunately those crappy fake iPhone plugs or similar didn't make much of a dent in the purse. So one day I decided it's time to "end his suffering" by getting him some decent...

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250ohm Impressions Thread

My first post here at head-fi - great forum!   I got the DT770 Pro 250 Ohm a year ago and am very happy with them. I use them both for music listening and for watching movies. They are super comfortable, even when wearing glasses.   The music I listen to ranges from progressive rock via jazz...
