So all the iTunes songs that are 256kbs when they are converted to alac they are still 256kbs quality no matter what ?even if the bitrate is high?

Ok my question is that when I drag and drop a song which is 320kbs mp3 in to iTunes and it selected to convert it alac , where does iTunes get its data from when it converts it to a higher codec? does it go in to iTunes servers where the song is and collects the information and then upconverts...

It has a headphone and microphone ports so I'm guessing u can use the headphone port which can be used with toslink to 3.5mm adapter if that helps
