This. If you've got the hard drive space, then I don't see any reason not to keep everything in flac, and just encode it into whatever lossy format as you need it (e.g. for putting on a portable player where space is a concern).

I'm going to suggest something a little unorthodox here: mix using the crappy stock iPod earbuds. Honestly. More people listen through those things than any other headphones. If you can get your mix to sound good on those, then it's a good mix.

If you have the flac command line tools installed, you can do this really easily. On my linux box, I can just go to a directory with flac files and go: flac -d *.flac This will decompress (hence the -d option) all the flac files in the directory and output the wave files.

A girl from my high school class is in them for skiiing (moguls I think...), and I still don't care.
