My suggestion for anyone looking at a single-unit DAC+AMP would be RME ADI-2. That's what I use, and it will be perfect for anything but the most power-hungry headphones. In-built EQ is also a differentiator and a game-changer IMO.

With full-sized headphones I feel that adding EQ into the mid-fi segment can get you very special tunings that are very difficult to replicate as a whole package with any other headphone, has anyone here been taking mid-fi IEMs and messing with EQ to see if something great they own is actually...

I use regular. I won't disagree that different woods can impart different qualities to sound, but my controversial take is that it's largely irrelevant. If they're the same price, get the one you prefer the look / physical weight of more.

I would echo the advice to go for EMu-Teaks, IMO they are by far the best Fostex-based including Fostex's own headphones from what I've heard. I haven't listened to the Shure SRH1540 but they would be a different sound signature that should still be able to reproduce bass well from what reviews...

Looking at the XTC-2.5C vs XTC-2O, is the choice just whether you need isolation or not? I generally expect Closed backs to have better bass quantity but with the tunings and reviews I've read it seems the Open can be more than sufficient, though I am a bass head. I also can't wrap my head...
