If I have a good DAC can I still use a MacBookPro as a source? (plus many other newbie questions)

Headphone.com has the LCD-2 @ 1-2 weeks out: http://www.headphone.com/headphones/audeze-lcd-2-leather.php . They don't charge your CC until it ships.   I've never read anything but good about the Schiit Bifrost DAC and with SPIDF, it does everything I can ask for and more (only comparing to...

If I have a good DAC can I still use a MacBookPro as a source? (plus many other newbie questions)

I don't know about the LCD + Burson, true, but while researching amps (in the same position os the OP), I did find many references to how great the Burson is, except when paired with the T1. Now the T1 requires more power to operate than the Senns and just about anything else (not many 600ohm...

If I have a good DAC can I still use a MacBookPro as a source? (plus many other newbie questions)

T1 is 102 db @ 1mw. HD800 is 103 db (IIRC). All current ortho phones are less efficient and from what I've seen on the forums they require lots of power even though the load is not as high as their dynamic brethren. I actually thought the LCDs were in the 80's, but maybe that's the HE-6. 10db is...

If I have a good DAC can I still use a MacBookPro as a source? (plus many other newbie questions)

If you are getting the LCD-2, I would not get the Burson DAC/AMP. The LCD is rather inefficient and therefore needs power to drive it. I would get the Lyr (which provides gobs and gobs of power: 6 watts @ 32ohms!) and the Bifrost. That combo will be cheaper than the Burson as well.   I have...

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.

Yeah, surprised me too (though that thread is not being updated anymore). I did some googling and I found some info for the iPad 1 that stated "USB 1.1" support. The Bifrost uses async USB 2. USB 2 is backwards compat with 1.x, but maybe it's causing a problem with the iPad. Or maybe it's the...

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.

I just tried this with my brand new Bifrost (arrived yesterday). iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1 with cam kit. It locks up the iPad hard, requiring a hard reset. Tried it twice. Then to verify, I hooked up the Bifrost USB to my MacBook Air and it worked fine.   Quote:

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.

I canceled my Schiit direct order on Sunday night, and placed an order with Audio Advisors via Amazon. Just showed up on my doorstep 30 minutes ago and shipping was free.   I just checked now and Audio Advisor is out of stock, but Kraft Street Audio has some at a $30 markup (free shipping...

    NEW Burson HA-160DS Integrated DAC/Amp

The 160D/DS are all solid state, so there is no burn in.   And to the poster with the T1's, I read the same thing that the 160D/DS are not a good match. I went ahead and ordered the Schiit Lyr myself on the advice that the T1's do better with a decent tube amp.   Quote:

Electrostatic Discharge on Headphone Amp. Is it dangerous?

I live in the US and everything here is grounded. But I know that the Lyr has ground isolation, so it would not surprise me if it used the case for grounding in the absence of an electrical ground. I can't say for sure though.   Can you plug it into a grounded outlet and see if that works...

If I have a good DAC can I still use a MacBookPro as a source? (plus many other newbie questions)

I'm in the same boat as you. I live in a not-quite rural area. Only electronics store is Best-Buy about 30 minutes from here. So I just did a lot of reading (especially here on head-fi) and I ended up going with the Beyer T1's because the general consensus is that while just slightly less...

"Should" and "Might" seem like the same qualification to me. ;-)   Quote:

If I have a good DAC can I still use a MacBookPro as a source? (plus many other newbie questions)

Never heard of Ray Samuels myself, but when I was doing research, the interwebs were saying the Burson Audio HA-160D + Senn HD 650 were a "match made in heaven". Since the HD800 is a (much) more refined version of the 650 it should be a good match with the Burson. The Burson is an all-in-one...

If I have a good DAC can I still use a MacBookPro as a source? (plus many other newbie questions)

Any Mac with SPIDF out (which for current models is everything but the Air) will be a great source. Search the forums and you can find threads on how easy it is to get bit perfect output with SPIDF from a Mac.   p.s. There is no Senn 850. The 800 is the one you are thinking of and it's about...

Can a fiio e9/e7(or e17) combo plug into an ipod?

At 200 bucks? Just get the DT880 250ohm (or DT990 if you want a less-neutral, bass-heavy sound). There's really no point in getting the 600ohm versions unless you have a high-quality dac/amp (I would consider the minimum the CA DACMagic plus around $500).   Plus you don't need an wall wart...
