Reciever with decent/good headphone out?
The Mitsubishi DA R-20 has a great headphone preamp and appears on ebay occasionally. This is from the late 70's and a great receiver.- FreddyE

Bose Wave radio rated #1 in Consumer Reports
My brother-in law gave me the Bose noice-cancelling headphones for Christmas, at $300. Since the sound was mediocre at best, and cannot be used without the noise-cancelling feature and accompaning hiss, and I never fly, I traded it for the Bose Wave Radio since there was no other Bose product...- FreddyE

My vintage tube amps and speakers
I have an old Akai reel to reel tape recorder with crossfield heads and two separate tube amps, one for each channel from the 60's. It is a portable and very big and heavy. I feel like lugging it out to see how the amps sound with good earphones (grado 60's)- FreddyE

Bottom Line For PCD/MP3 Players
Thanks Lisa. That information helps. Any sense of the hiss issue with the 350? That model is attractive at $99, with ac adapter and advanced features. The battery play time on the Chormex is just so short.- FreddyE

Bottom Line For PCD/MP3 Players
Thanks for the feedback on the 350. To me it is down to the 350 on Amazon for $99 and free shipping. Can anyone give me accurate feedback on how bad the hiss issue is? The Chromex without the hiss problem but with sad battery performance. Or wait for the 550 to come in and the price to...- FreddyE

Bottom Line For PCD/MP3 Players
Ok guys and gals what's the bottom line on PCD/MP3 players? Iriver 350 seems decent but disturbing hiss on optical out, which is really not a true out. The 150 that is disturbing in terms of inadequate power supply/battery usage but good sound. Wait for the 550 which at $180 when it comes to the...- FreddyE
