Can anyone suggest pads that will fit the Sennheiser HD 420's? Any comments on their sound quality. These are an older model that were well rated at one time.

You might contact Sennheiser online at http://www.sennheiserusa.com/service/index.html. I don't see replacement pads for the 420, but if I remember correctly the 430 looked similar; perhaps they'll be able to tell you if the 430 pads will fit.
I enjoy my pair of 430s quite a bit. The closest thing I have to reference headphones is a set of old Stax electrets, which in comparison are much clearer and better defined. Still, the Sennheiser 430 is a good all-around headphone, and my favorite pair of dynamics. They are well balanced, and especially magical on piano and good orchestral arrangements.
