Tyll (formerly) of Headroom is working on measurements for the DT-48E and DT-1350 at InnerFidelity.com. The test results should be up by tomorrow 4/27/2011.

And thank you for a great and valuable review. I'm constantly amazed at the interest in this product, and your review will help a lot of people who would like to know more but might be afraid to take the chance with either of these, the A or E version.

I bought the 48s (silver, 8 ohm with Beyer transformer box), the 48 - 25 ohm, and the 48 - 200 ohm all in the same year, 1974. When used with the same cushions they all sounded identical. Today I have the new 48E which is really different. From what I can gather of the postings in Head-Fi plus...

Interesting that you found the 'E' version's highs to be attenuated. My new 2011 DT-48E is slightly weaker than the Sennheiser HD-800 at 14 khz, but stronger(!) at 15 and 16 khz. Above 16 khz is difficult to judge because it sounds faint to me on both headphones.

My headband that came with the 48E is like a balloon - you have to squeeze it about 90 percent to feel the metal part of the headband inside.

The current DT-48E circa 2010 has a prominent high end - much more so than the rolled-off 48's of 20 or so years ago. Same goes for the bass. Although the bass on the current 48E is weak compared to most 'phones, it's far better than the old 48's, but for best results, requires a perfect seal...

Update: Using the DT-48E with the Cute Beyond headphone amp, the highs are extended somewhat and the whole mid and upper ranges become more open with a better soundstage. Unfortunately, the bass also becomes tighter, and being that the bass was already lean to begin with, it's not a good tradeoff.

Comment by 'dalethorn' in article 'A Mere Mortals Guide To Why Bose Headphones Suck'

I remember that J. Gordon Holt used to say "Who cares how long it lasts if it doesn't sound good?" And I would always respond "Who cares how good it sounds if it doesn't last?"

    The Beyerdynamic DT48 Arrives...

I had a Stax SRX MkIII, and I'd say the DT-48 holds up OK on the low end, perhaps on the high end but I'm not sure of that yet. But I'm pretty sure that despite a great sounding midrange overall, the DT-48 still has some midrange coloration that the Stax would not have, and the Sennheiser 800...

    Testing audiophile claims and myths

Not disingenuous at all! I don't think you can draw such a distinct line between the "classes" of gear or their aficionados. Besides, forums like this run on the advertising, and all those advertisers' products surely fall into that "highly marketed" audiophile class. So what's the story? Are we...

    Testing audiophile claims and myths

I don't drink Coke or Pepsi, and would recommend against it for anyone who cares about their health. Same reason I recommend good hi-fi gear for listening to those CD's or whatever. Better for your mental/spiritual health. And good hi-fi gear does sound better than the typical K-Mart stereo...

24-bit audio a con, according to Gizmodo

One of the three fundamental laws of logic: "Whatever is, is." So who cares what Apple does? The tracks will either be or they won't be. Either way it's a package deal. If you really want lossless super-fi tracks, you'd be better off starting with Stereophile's sources and branching off from...
